Woods crash ambulance crew cited domestic violence
MIAMI - The ambulance crew that took golfer Tiger Woods from the scene of his fateful car crash last year did not let his wife ride with him because they said the incident was a case of domestic violence, according to Florida police records cited by a local newspaper on Friday. The new information from Florida Highway Patrol records, quoted by the Orlando Sentinel, once again raised the possibility of domestic violence on November 27 between Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren, although Woods has repeatedly denied this.
Cynthia Nixon receives award from gay organization
NEW YORK - Gay media group GLAAD honored the TV series "Brothers & Sisters" and singled-out actress Cynthia Nixon for her work at a Saturday night gala highlighting gay marriage rights. "We are bringing marriage back to its fundamentals and revitalizing it from its roots up," "Sex and the City" actress Nixon said in accepting an honorary award at the 21st annual Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards.
Official probes drugs linked to Corey Haim
LOS ANGELES - California Attorney General Jerry Brown on Friday said his office has opened an investigation into a prescription drug ring linked to the sudden death of actor Corey Haim earlier this week. Brown, who is running for California governor, has ordered probes into the drug-related deaths of more than 200 people in the past, including celebrity Anna Nicole Smith. His officers also aided in the investigation of Michael Jackson's death.
Phil Spector's lawyers file appeal in murder case
LOS ANGELES - Lawyers for music producer Phil Spector have appealed his conviction for killing a Hollywood actress, claiming the trial judge made several errors including introducing new evidence at his second trial. The appeal, filed earlier this week in the Second Appellate Court in California, says the judge unfairly allowed five women to testify that years before the 2003 shooting, Spector had threatened them with a gun.
Public Enemy's Chuck D still fighting the power
LOS ANGELES , "Welcome to the Terrordome" and "911 Is a Joke." And still sounding that clarion call is Public Enemy and its dedicated frontman, Chuck D.
Custom-designed Jackson furniture up for auction
LOS ANGELES - Some 22 pieces of elaborate furniture custom-made for Michael Jackson, including a leather armchair embellished with crystals and gold leaf, will be auctioned off in June, organizers said on Friday. Julien's Auctions said the furniture was ordered by the "Thriller" singer for a home near London he planned to rent during a series of 50 comeback concerts in England last year.
Fox mulling "Avatar" summer re-release
LOS ANGELES - Get ready for "Avatar"-plus. James Cameron and Fox are in discussions about rereleasing "Avatar," primarily in 3D theaters, in late summer -- and, tantalizingly, with additional scenes that had been left on the cutting-room floor in the rush to ready the epic for its December 18 release.
Ex-Gov. Blagojevich fights back on new "Apprentice"
LOS ANGELES - Rod Blagojevich has already lost one job. Now the disgraced former governor of Illinois is hoping to avoid the words "You're fired!" as he fights for his favorite charity, and his reputation, on the TV show "Celebrity Apprentice". Blagojevich, who was impeached and removed from office, is awaiting trial later this year on charges of corruption and allegations that he tried to sell President Barack Obama's former U.S. Senate seat.
U.S. theater stars sing "Happy Birthday" to Sondheim
NEW YORK - The leading lights of U.S. musical theater will sing "Happy Birthday" to the great Broadway composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim on his 80th birthday in two New York Philharmonic concerts next week. The concerts, on March 15 and March 16, will include songs and orchestral pieces from Sondheim musical theater favorites like "Company," "Follies," "A Little Night Music," "Sweeney Todd," "Merrily We Roll Along," "Into The Woods," and "Sunday in the Park with George," in addition to rarely heard material.
"Matrix" bad guy eyes "Captain America" villain
LOS ANGELES - Australian actor Hugo Weaving, who played bad guy Agent Smith in the "Matrix" franchise, is in talks to join the "Captain America" movie as the villainous Red Skull. The Marvel Studios project remains in search of the actor to play Steve Rogers, Captain America's alter ego. It will be directed by Joe Johnston, who recently worked with Weaving in "The Wolfman."
