Acer, Ferrari unveil joint smartphone model
HELSINKI - Ferrari and Acer <2353.TW> unveiled on Friday a joint new smartphone model using Google's <GOOG.O> Android software, hoping to boost its so far limited role in the increasingly crowded smartphone market. The version of Acer's Liquid model -- with production limited to 200,000 -- will be Ferrari branded and sold with pre-loaded content from the company and its racing team.
James Murdoch says apps cannibalize newspapers
MONACO - Sales of newspaper apps for devices like the Apple <AAPL.O> iPad are cannibalizing sales of physical newspapers, James Murdoch, head of News Corp's <NWSA.O> operations in Europe and Asia, said on Friday. News Corp in June closed its free Times of London website. The Times, the Sunday Times and Britain's best-selling Sunday tabloid the News of the World -- also owned by News Corp -- are now available online only to paying subscribers.
Newsweek and Daily Beast agree merger
NEW YORK and magazine Newsweek have agreed a deal to combine, Daily Beast co-founder and editor Tina Brown said, just weeks after abandoning merger talks. The agreement will combine the two groups in a 50-50 joint venture called the Newsweek Daily Beast Company. Management will report to an independent board.
Fund manager Heebner turns back on Apple
BOSTON - Investment manager Ken Heebner, whose CGM Focus portfolio once ranked among the world's best mutual funds, dumped nearly all of his holdings in Apple Inc <AAPL.O>. during the third quarter, a securities filing shows. Apple's share price is off 3.17 percent at $306.63, and market analysts reason that Heebner's decision may have put pressure on the stock price.
Intel raises dividend and signals healthy growth
SAN FRANCISCO - Intel Corp <INTC.O> is boosting its quarterly dividend by 15 percent, a move seen by investors as a sign that the world's largest chipmaker is on track for healthy growth. The dividend hike, which sent Intel shares up nearly 2 percent, also reflects a growing trend among technology giants like Cisco Systems Inc <CSCO.O> to give back more cash to shareholders following belt-tightening during the global economic slump.
Yahoo says report of 20 percent in layoffs "misleading"
SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> called a media report it was planning to cut one-fifth of its workforce "misleading and inaccurate," but the Web portal stopped short of ruling out any layoffs. Yahoo, which is trying to revive revenue growth amid competition from search giant Google <GOOG.O> and fast-growing social networking services like Facebook, said in an emailed statement on Thursday it is "always evaluating expenses to align with the company's financial goals."
Twitter links users to Apple music social network
SAN FRANCISCO - Microblogging website Twitter said on Thursday it will link its service with Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> new music-oriented social network. Apple announced the Ping social network in September. It works within Apple's iTunes music program and lets users follow artists and recommend songs to their chosen circle of friends.
Nvidia eyes higher sales, talks up Tegra
SAN FRANCISCO - Graphics chipmaker Nvidia <NVDA.O> forecast higher sales for the current quarter and said its mobile business would take off next year when tablets and smartphones will use its Tegra chips. Nvidia's shares rose in after-hours trade after the company said its revenue in the fourth quarter would rise between 3 percent and 5 percent sequentially.
Japan mobile phone app takes photos, counts calories
TOKYO - Dieters, take heart. A new weapon in the fight against fat is on its way: a mobile phone application that counts calories from a photograph of what's on your plate. While existing applications require users to type in the food and the calorie information themselves, software developed by Japan's NTT Communications evaluates the color and shapes of food, then compares it with a database and counts the calories.
Google says not building Facebook rival
MONACO - Internet search leader Google Inc <GOOG.O> is not building a social network to compete with Facebook, a company executive reiterated on Thursday, despite an intensifying rivalry between the two leading Internet groups. "We're not working on a social network platform that's just going to be another social network platform," Google's head of mobile product development, Hugo Barra, said in answer to a question at the Monaco Media Forum.
