Fitness guru Jack LaLanne dies at 96 in California
LOS ANGELES - Jack LaLanne, a one-time sugar-holic who became a television fitness guru preaching exercise and healthy diet to a generation of American housewives, died on Sunday at age 96, his daughter said. LaLanne, who became U.S. television fixture in his close-fitting jumpsuit starting in 1959 and came to be regarded as the father of the modern fitness movement, succumbed to pneumonia following a brief illness at his home in Morro Bay, along the California's central coast.
Natalie Portman romantic comedy leads box office
LOS ANGELES - Natalie Portman, already riding high during awards season with "Black Swan," took the No. 1 spot at the North American box office on Sunday for the first time in five years with her romantic comedy debut. "No Strings Attached," in which she co-stars with Ashton Kutcher, sold about $20.3 million worth of tickets across the United States and Canada during the three days beginning January 21, distributor Paramount Pictures said.
Sundance familiar territory for Elizabeth Banks
PARK CITY, Utah - After cutting her teeth for a decade in films like "Seabiscuit," "Spider-Man," "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and "W," Elizabeth Banks is currently killing it as Jack Donaghy's baby-mama-to-be, Avery Jessup, on 30 Rock. Returning to her roots at Sundance this year in two comedies, "My Idiot Brother" and "The Details," the native New Englander reflects on her favorite co-stars of all time, studying Shakespeare and swapping emails with David O. Russell.
"Warriors" director tackles Saddam Hussein's son
PARK CITY, Utah plays both the disgusted Yahia and the nefarious Uday.
Ad agencies spurn innovative documentary
PARK CITY, Utah - A regular at Sundance, Morgan Spurlock -- who won the documentary directing award for "Super Size Me" in 2004 -- returns this year with "The Greatest Movie Ever Sold." The meta-doc -- essentially a documentary about a documentary -- world-premiered Saturday ahead of a theatrical release in North America via Sony Pictures Classics.
Anton Yelchin "Crazy" about improv movie
PARK CITY, Utah - Twenty-one-year-old actor Anton Yelchin has deftly navigated the independent and studio worlds, though he says it's been more of a happy accident than a strategic decision to move back and forth between films such as 2009's "Star Trek" and "Terminator Salvation" and this year's "Like Crazy." That film, from "Douchebag" director Drake Doremus, is the story of a long-distance romance, and stars Yelchin and Felicity Jones as young lovers whose relationship is put to the test. "Like Crazy," a U.S. dramatic competition entry, premiered Saturday at Sundance, and was snapped up for $4 million by Paramount early the next day.
Stunning debut lifts the veil on life in Iran
PARK CITY, Utah - "Circumstance" is an amazingly accomplished and complex first feature from Iranian-American writer-director Maryam Keshavarz. Drawing on some of her own experiences, she has created an insiders look at a world few of us will ever get to see. The political, sexual and religious labyrinth of Iran today feels at once contemporary and utterly foreign. Told with a modern rhythm and propulsive soundtrack, it's a compelling story that should attract both a young and older audience of culturally curious moviegoers.
At 83, Harry Belafonte still sings of justice
PARK CITY, Utah - At age 83, his days of singing calypso tunes to thousands of fans are behind him, but Harry Belafonte says he still has one song to sing for people around the world -- his song of justice. Belafonte is at the Sundance Film Festival this week with a new documentary, "Sing Your Song," that tells of his life from being born in Harlem and raised in Jamaica to becoming a star singer of the 1950s and '60s with hits such as "Banana Boat Song," also known as "Day-O."
"King's Speech" reigns with Producers Guild award
BEVERLY HILLS, California. - "The King's Speech" won best-produced film from the Producers Guild of America on Saturday, a regal boost to its Oscar aspirations in an awards season so far swept by "The Social Network." The producers of "King's Speech" -- Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Gareth Unwin -- said they thought they were "the last guys in the running" among the 10 nominees for the top Producers award, which comes just before Tuesday's Oscar nominations.
Zsa Zsa Gabor out of hospital after leg amputation
LOS ANGELES - Actress Zsa Zsa Gabor has been released from the hospital eight days after she had her right leg amputated, her spokesman said on Saturday. Gabor's release from the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles came more than a week ahead of schedule, said her publicist, John Blanchette, who added that doctors were pleased with her progress.
