The Nobel laureate was ordered to spend another 18 months in detention in August after a court convicted her over an incident in which a US man swam to her house. An initial appeal against the verdict was rejected in October. "We submitted the appeal petition to the supreme court. Now we must wait to find out whether the court will agree to hear the case," Kyi Win, the head of Suu Kyi's legal team, told AFP outside the court. "We hope for the best," Kyi Win said. It was not clear when the court would announce whether it would hear the appeal. The fresh appeal came as Suu Kyi's case was set to dominate an expected meeting between Obama and the Myanmar junta's prime minister, Thein Sein, at a regional forum in Singapore on Sunday. The extension of her house arrest after a trial at Yangon's notorious Insein Prison sparked international outrage, as it effectively keeps her off the stage for elections promised by the regime some time in 2010. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called on military-ruled Myanmar on Thursday to free the 64-year-old Suu Kyi, who has been in detention for 14 of the last 20 years. The iron-fisted generals refused to recognise the landslide victory of her National League for Democracy in elections in 1990. The current leader of the regime, Senior General Than Shwe, was taken ill with a mild stomach complaint Friday as he arrived in Sri Lanka on a Buddhist pilgrimage and diplomatic trip, his first overseas visit since 2004. He was treated for a suspected food bug, a doctor from the hospital that treated him said, but later continued with his programme. In recent months there have been signs of rapprochement between Suu Kyi and the junta, while the Obama administration is now promoting engagement with the regime because sanctions on their own have failed to bear fruit. Premier Thein Sein is expected to join Sunday's meeting at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. The encounter would be the first meeting between a US president and a Myanmar leader in 43 years. At another regional meeting held in Thailand last month, Thein Sein said Suu Kyi could play a part in national reconciliation ahead of the 2010 polls, but it was unclear if she could actually take part in them. However, when asked whether the junta was likely to loosen curbs on Suu Kyi after the Singapore, Clinton said in Manila: "I doubt it. This is a long term effort that requires a lot of patience." Suu Kyi wrote a letter to Than Shwe at the end of September offering her cooperation in getting Western sanctions lifted, after years of favouring harsh measures against the generals. She also had two meetings with Aung Kyi, the labour minister and official liaison between her and the junta, the first such talks since January 2008, and met western diplomats in Yangon. Earlier this month the regime allowed her to appear in front of the media after holding talks with US Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, the highest level official from Washington to visit Myanmar for 14 years. A visit by a US senator Jim Webb in August secured the release of John Yettaw, the eccentric American man who swam across a lake to Suu Kyi's mansion in May and sparked the case that led to her detention being prolonged.
