Director, writer and producer James Cameron is reflected in a visitor's 3D glasses as he speaks at a panel discussion for his upcoming movie ''Avatar'' during the 40th annual Comic Con Convention in San Diego, July 23, 2009.

SEOUL (Reuters) - Director James Cameron, whose blockbuster "Avatar" set off a 3D frenzy in the movie industry, on Thursday told television producers to put aside their worries about higher filming costs and embrace the technology.
Entertainment | Technology | Film | Lifestyle
Manufacturers hope the technology will be as big a boost for the industry as the transition to color television from black and white, but growth is being restrained by high costs for content makers, leading to a dearth of programing.
Consumers who just paid major sums for new flat screen sets may not be ready for another major payment for 3D TVs when there is little to see in the format that requires special glasses for viewing, analysts said.
"(Big entertainment companies) can't be afraid to shoot in 3D because tens of thousands of people all over the world are shooting in 3D every day," Cameron said.
"We're going to have 3D TVs all around us ... and we're going to need thousands of hours of sports, comedy and music and all kinds of entertainment," he said at a technology forum in Seoul.
"Avatar", the highest-grossing film of all time, taking in more than $2 billion, was also reportedly one of the most expensive movies to make with a budget of at least $300 million due in part to its 3D filming.
Cameron said it would prove cost effective over the long run for TV producers to learn how to shoot in 3D instead of trying to convert existing 2D content to the format.
"There's not going to be the time or the money to convert that. It's going to have to be shot live. We're going to learn how to do live shooting. The cost will come down on live 3D production," Cameron said.
South Korea's leading TV brands Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics released 3D televisions earlier this year and anticipate positive sales for 2010.
Japan's Sony Corp will enter the 3D battle this summer, increasing the need for content.
Global demand for 3D TVs will probably reach 15.6 million units in 2013 from an estimated 1.2 million this year, according to research firm DisplaySearch.
Numbers could hit 64 million in 2018, when the research firm expects total sales revenues to reach $17 billion.
"You've got the channel, you've got the sets," Cameron said. "The missing piece is content. You've got to get the content."

If I never own a 3D TV that’ll be OK with me. The idea of wearing those stupid glasses, sitting bolt-upright and not tilting my head (reviews have stated that’s the best way to achieve the full 3D effect) while watching a full-length movie is just not my idea of a good time. I see this technology as akin to Quadrophonic sound. It’s nice to a degree, but not essential.

It’s a misconception that a “3D TV” will be required to do 3D. Anyone that has kids has probably purchased a 3D movie for their TV already. Granted the picture quality may be better, the calibration easier, the color more vibrant, etc. do to a higher pixel count. But to call it a 3dTV is a misnomer. It’s just a high resolution TV.
The 3D part is in the video itself and the glasses on your face.

socratesfoot – you are misinformed. There are various 3D methods, and some may work with regular TVs (although you still need a player capable of handling the content), but broadcast methods (ex: ESPN’s Masters broadcast recently) require special video processing, else you end up with something like 2 squashed images side-by-side. You will need a 3D capable TV, plus those pesky glasses, to get the full effect.

Yeah,…this is what we need. A whole generation wearing glasses with a mini tv planted in each eye so they can absorb propaganda in first person perspective. It won’t be a dearth of programing. It’ll the death of minds everywhere. Think about the poor souls that spend all day every day plastered to their tv’s as it is. Losing touch with reality and turning into psychosis. A place where the only culture shock will be having to remove your television. Imagine experiencing a movie like The exorcism of Emily Rose as if you were there. When the first Exorcist film hit theaters they has to rush ambulances to several of them because people went into shock. The more real your mind perceives it to be the more difficult it is to stifle bodily reaction. The normal jump in a scary scene knowing that your only watching a movie becomes a heart attack in two boxes on your face. not a pretty thought. Although that’s just one genre of entertainment. There’s also the porn addict. These people will never leave their homes!…lol

I suppose the answer to that nightmare would be moderation. Written disclaimers don’t work. nobody ever pays attention to them. That would require someone to read. Sorry about the extreme view but as a writer I think about these types of scenarios.

Yea like im gonna listen to Cameron at this point. Avatar was one of the most overhyped drawn out movies i have seen. My wife and i had to fight off sleep about half way through. Yea it was pretty and all but honestly that movie could have been an hour and a half and gotten the point across. We both agreed we should have gone to see Sherlock Holmes instead.

Sorry the 3D experience has always left me feeling motion sickness with a splitting headache so I will not be participating in 3D TV! Others feel the same I believe?

Tell Cameron to shove it .. not everyone likes it. By the end of Avatar, I couldn’t wait to get the glasses off, my eyes we starting to hurt. Loved the movie, but I will do without 3D in it’s current form.
