Mebane, NC, United States (AHN) - An Amtrak train bound for Charlotte, North Carolina, hit a tractor-trailer Thursday morning, injuring several people.
Train 73, the Piedmont, was on its way from Raleigh when it struck a truck at 8:05 a.m., Amtrak said in a statement.
At least seven of the three dozen passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to an area hospital. The remaining passengers were transported to a nearby community center.
No crew members were reported injured.
The collision took place at the crossing on Fifth Street in Mebane, west of Raleigh. It caused a fire in the Piedmont's locomotive and one coach car. The locomotive and three cars also derailed.
Amtrak made no statement about a possible cause of the collision. The trailer reportedly was stuck on the tracks.
The North Carolina Transportation Department said the derailment closed Fifth Street near U.S. Highway 70. The accident also affected service in trains traveling from Charlotte to Raleigh and between New York and Charlotte. "Passengers will be accommodated via alternate transportation," Amtrak said.
