Benedict, making his first visit to Sicily as pope, said an open-air mass for more than 200,000 people near the Sicilian capital's port and then later addressed a rally of tens of thousands of young people. "Do not succumb to the temptations of the Mafia, which is a path of death, incompatible with the gospel, as your bishops have told you many times," he told the young people gathered at an evening rally in a Palermo square. The pope mentioned the Mafia only in that sentence of his two-page speech to the young people, which was centered on family values, and in a speech to bishops in which he mentioned that a priest, Pino Puglisi, had been killed by the mob in 1993. "While it is good that he used the word, I don't understand this timid way of approaching the issue," Rita Borsellino, whose brother Paolo, a leading anti-Mafia magistrate, was killed by a Mafia car bomb in Palermo in 1992, told Reuters. "I was expecting him to develop the theme much more, especially in his address to the young people," she said. Paolo Borsellino was one of two magistrates killed in twin attacks in 1992. The other was Giovanni Falcone, who was blown up with his wife and his three-man police escort when the Mafia planted a massive bomb under the highway near Palermo airport. On his way to the airport at the end of the visit, Benedict stopped at the monument recalling Falcone's murder and laid flowers at the site. Sicily is no longer the scene of the bloody Mafia wars of the 1990s but magistrates say the mob still does brisk business in drug trafficking, extortion and getting a slice of lucrative public works contracts for companies it controls. GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT Earlier, Rita Borsellino expressed "great disappointment" that the pope only referred generically to "organized crime" in the main event of the day, the morning mass watched by millions of Sicilians on television. His homily was sprinkled with phrases such as a biblical reference to "a tremendous situation of violence" and the need to be "ashamed by evil." But leading anti-Mafia activists said they had hoped for a real moral broadside against the Mafia. "He could have been much more generous. To drive his point home, especially to the young, he could have mentioned the many victims, the bombs, the blood, the clan wars," Dino Paternostro, a leading activist, told Reuters. "I am quite disappointed. This is a missed opportunity," said Paternostro, editor of Citta Nuove (New Cities) newspaper in Corleone, the hill town made famous in "The Godfather" films. Benedict's words in Sicily were being compared to a pivotal visit to the southern island by Pope John Paul II in 1993. 1 2 Next World     Add a Comment *We welcome comments that advance the story directly or with relevant tangential information.
