Twitter gets new round of funding, new backers
SAN FRANCISCO - Twitter received $100 million in funding on Friday, valuing the company at $1 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter, as investors bet that the Web company's explosive growth will yield actual revenue or a lucrative deal. Investors including mutual fund giant T. Rowe Price <TROW.O> and private equity firm Insight Venture Partners took part in the latest round of funding which closed on Friday, according to Twitter. Twitter did not give the amount of the funding.
AT&T looks to flip net rules debate on Google
WASHINGTON/NEW YORK - AT&T Inc <T.N> said any new "net neutrality" rules imposed by U.S. regulators need to apply to Web companies like Google Inc <GOOG.O> as much as to phone companies to ensure a level playing field. In a letter Friday to the head of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission's Wireline Competition Bureau, the biggest U.S. telephone company argued that Google would have an unfair advantage if its Voice service is not subject to the same rules proposed by the FCC on phone operators.
Vanguard readies iPhone app as fund firms go mobile
MALVERN, Pennsylvania - Vanguard Group Inc wants to help investors watch their money while they're on the go, even as it wonders how much interest its long-term oriented customers have in minute-by-minute updates. The Pennsylvania investment giant is readying an application for Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone that will be a first in the mutual funds industry. It follows similar applications from Bank of America Corp <BAC.N> and E*Trade Financial Corp <ETFC.O> that allow customers to check their balances, pay bills or trade shares from mobile devices.
RIM seen facing increased market-share pressure
TORONTO - BlackBerry maker Research In Motion could see its share of the smartphone market eroded by competing devices like Apple's <AAPL.O> iPhone, analysts warned on Friday as RIM's stock plunged more than 16 percent in the wake of a disappointing profit and outlook report. Analysts again wondered whether RIM would be able to hold its own as it fights an increasingly intense battle for retail and corporate subscribers, even as the economy seems to be stabilizing.
EU seeks to ensure Microsoft ballot offers choices
BRUSSELS - European Union antitrust regulators are seeking to ensure that an offer by U.S. software company Microsoft <MSFT.O> to give users the chance to choose rivals' Web browsers was workable for consumers and its rivals. Microsoft proposed to the European Commission in July to install a ballot screen that would allow users to set up rival browsers on its latest Windows operating system, a move which could end a decade-long dispute with the EU executive.
Rossellini ponders how to make online video pay
MILAN - The Internet is the future for experimental film-making, but the time has come to make online video art profitable, Isabella Rossellini says. The Italian actress who has become a web sensation with her short films about the sex life of insects and marine animals said the audience for such ventures was growing but financing remained problematic.
Tweeting Ugandan gorillas make friends online
BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST, Uganda - Lurking deep in the mist-glazed forests of east Africa, Uganda's mountain gorillas are preparing to 'tweet' for their survival. With the launch on Saturday of the "Friend a Gorilla" campaign, human fans will soon be able to follow the everyday drama of one of the few remaining 720 mountain gorillas online, far from the red ants, mud and tropical rain of their habitats.
Judge delays hearing on Google books deal
SAN FRANCISCO - A judge delayed a hearing on a $125 million deal that would allow Google Inc <GOOG.O> to create a massive digital library. In a two-page order on Thursday, U.S. District Judge Denny Chin postponed the fairness hearing scheduled for October 7 regarding a controversial settlement between Google and groups representing authors and publishers.
HP sees tech rebound
SAN FRANCISCO - Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N> predicted that overall IT spending would bounce back next year, but set a fiscal 2010 revenue forecast that came in just below Wall Street's expectations. The IT industry will return to growth in 2010, and HP should outpace that growth, Chief Executive Mark Hurd told an audience at the company's yearly analyst meeting on Thursday.
French exec blames email for staff stress
NEW YORK - A top executive at France's biggest telecommunications company, which is dealing with a spate of suicides, warned that the barrage of emails from smartphones and personal computers was stressing out employees. While France Telecom <FTE.PA> Chief Financial Officer Gervais Pellissier did not directly blame suicides on around-the-clock email, he said workers in all big companies are under more pressure in the age of the BlackBerry.
