Taiwan strips ex-leader Chen of perks after convictions
TAIPEI (AFP) - – Taiwan has stripped ex-president Chen Shui-bian of privileges of due to him as a former head of state, after he was convicted of bribery by the island's highest court, the government said Friday.
Chen will no longer receive monthly allowances, annual expenses and protection by up to 12 bodyguards, to which he had been entitled after serving two terms between 2000-2008, said the interior ministry.
According to Taiwanese law, a former head of the state enjoys an annual stipend of up to 11 million Taiwan dollars (360,000 US dollars) in addition to monthly medical expenses.
The Supreme Court on Thursday sentenced Chen and his wife, Wu Shu-chen, to 19 years in prison on two bribery charges in the first final verdict of a string of corruption cases implicating them.
The couple were sentenced to 11 years in prison for taking bribes in a land-acquisition deal and another eight-year term for using their powers to secure a position for a businesswoman in exchange for money.
Chen, who has been locked up in a detention centre near Taipei since late 2008, will be transferred to a formal prison in northern Taiwan following Thursday's decision, a court spokesman said.
The authorities will also determine whether to suspend the sentence for his wheelchair-bound wife, who is paralysed from waist down, or to put her in a prison hospital ward, he said.
Chen became the first former leader in Taiwan to be convicted and detained after a district court last year sentenced him to life imprisonment on multiple accounts of corruption.
The High Court in June reduced the couple's sentences to a combined 20 years each in a decision challenged by both the prosecution and the defendants.
However, the legal drama has not come to an end as the top court has ordered a new trial on three related cases involving embezzlement of state funds, money laundering and more bribery charges.
Chen has blasted the trials as a vendetta carried out by the island's current administration in retaliation for his support, while he was in office, of Taiwan's formal independence from mainland China.
