Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - Stocks were mixed Tuesday as weakness overseas led to a lower open domestically. However, markets received a late push after the Fed said the recovery is strengthening and that rates will likely stay unchanged.
The Federal Reserve released minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee meeting on Mar. 16. Fed officials said they will wait for evidence of a self sustaining economy before looking to lift interest rates from historic lows.
Comments also showed that the consumer spending rebound may be somewhat slowed by the high unemployment level.
The news helped the Dow Jones Industrial average erase most of its losses, closing just 4 points lower at 10,970. The average was slightly lower despite advancing issue edging out decliners 16 to 14.
The Travelers Companies (NYSE: TRV) was the biggest Dow laggard, down 1.4 percent, with shares sagging on new particular news item.
The S&P 500 was able to add 2 points or 0.2 percent on Tuesday as the financials offset weakness elsewhere. The financial sector added 1.1 percent on the session.
Retailers also proved some strength, adding 0.6 percent on Tuesday. Dollar General (NYSE: DG) was a leader in the sector, adding 4.7 percent following an upgrade by Wells Fargo.
The Nasdaq Composite performed best, adding 7 points or 0.3 percent. Big-cap tech helped lift the composite, with Research in Motion (NSDQ: RIMM) providing a boost, up 3.8 percent on the day.
Crude oil continued its winning streak, touching a new 18-month high of $87.09 before settling at $86.84 a barrel, a 0.3 percent gain.
In corporate news, shares of Massey Energy (NYSE: MEE) were pummeled 11.4 percent following a tragic explosion at its West Virginia mine that killed 25 workers.
Wednesday’s market will see the release of the U.S. consumer credit level for February.
