Springfield, Oregon, United States (AHN) - A suspected car thief in Springfield, OR, made a fatal decision to turn his lights off during a high speed chase with police, which ended with him being pinned behind the wheel of the vehicle after it hit a tree.

The Register Guard newspaper reported that 21-year-old Christopher Lee Rose fled police in a stolen 1994 Honda Prelude about 1 a.m. Sunday morning. While on the run, Lee reportedly turned off the car’s lights in an attempt to elude police.

Officers found the car after it had slammed into a tree shortly after they lost sight of him. Rose was unresponsive and rescuers had to extricate him from the car.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Local television station KEZI reported Rose was at times travelling at speeds above 100 miles per hour.
