Parents disagree with suggestion to only recruit graduate teachers
Channel NewsAsia - Monday, November 24
SINGAPORE: The Primary Education Review and Implementation Committee is getting feedback on ways to enhance primary education.
There have been mixed reactions to the Education Ministry’s proposals, particularly the suggestion to recruit only graduate teachers for primary schools.
Chong Poh Soon, parent and engineer, said: "My concern is more about the aptitude of the teachers. I have seen passionate teachers who are not graduates."
The Education Ministry said successful A—level and polytechnic applicants will be sent for teaching degrees. But some parents said MOE should also consider passionate applicants who are not willing to get a degree.
Majority of the parents at a focus group discussion said that while education qualifications are important so that teachers have the ability to deliver content, there is no need to make graduate recruitment a policy as it may discourage those with the aptitude, but not the grades.
Many parents have also asked for non—academic achievements to be given greater prominence and to be included in key performance index.
Santhi Saravanan, a parent and freelance teacher, said: "They should include non—academic areas such as public speaking, interaction between peers and social work as part of KPI."
As for the proposal to make all primary schools single session, some parents feel it is a good move but it may not be appropriate for all popular schools.
Senior Minister of State for Education Grace Fu, who is also the chairperson of the Primary Education Review and Implementation Committee, said: "Maybe the schools will adopt slightly customised solutions. Some schools may expand, some schools may carry on partial single (session) for some time, some schools may consider cutting enrolment. So it may not be a one—size—fits—all kind of solution."
The Primary Education Review and Implementation Committee will be conducting more focus group discussions and also a live webchat where the public can contribute their views.
More information on the review is available online at www.moe.gov.sg/initiatives/peri. The committee will be submitting a proposal to the Education Ministry in January next year.
