China defends censorship after Google threat
BEIJING - China defended its extensive censorship and brushed aside hacking claims on Thursday, telling companies not to buck state control of the Internet after U.S. search giant Google <GOOG.O> threatened to quit the country. The Google dispute could stoke tensions between China and the United States, already at odds over the value of the yuan currency, trade quarrels, U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and climate change policy. It threw a spotlight on hacking and the Internet controls that Google says have stifled its business in China.

Little future for Google in China without search
SAN FRANCISCO/SHANGHAI - Google Inc, involved in high-stakes brinkmanship with the Chinese government, might still seek ways to market other products in the country even if it quits its China search business. But without search, its most important business in China, the technology giant would struggle to retain a foothold in the world's biggest Internet market by users, said analysts.
Google could find new road in China
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> says it may be forced to leave China, but the search giant has room to compromise in its battle with Beijing, and both sides have reason to do so. The company's surprise statement on Tuesday that it was no longer ready to censor search results in China and might pull out of the world's biggest Internet market by users has put it squarely at odds with the Chinese government.
Google drama stokes online nationalism, regret in China
BEIJING - U.S. Internet giant Google's threat to withdraw from China is generating an outpouring of nationalist fervor from the country's online community, with some cheering it as a victory for the Chinese. Google, the world's top search engine, said on Tuesday it would not abide by censorship and may shut its Chinese-language google.cn website because of a massive cyber-attack that also targeted at least 20 other companies.
Companies watch, wait as Google mulls leaving China
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc's <GOOG.O> potential departure from China may not prompt others to follow suit, but its high-profile declaration could help shine a light on the business environment in the world's third-largest economy. Google said on Tuesday that it might stop operations in China, an important market for everything from energy to software, a move that could ramp up pressure on others to take a stand.
Haiti earthquake triggers massive Twitter response
LOS ANGELES - The devastating earthquake in Haiti is the biggest natural disaster so far in the Twitter era, and response on the micro-blogging site has been accordingly momentous. According to Twitter.com, four of the 10 most popular topics posted on the site were related to Haiti, where the death toll from a magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck on Tuesday could run into the tens of thousands.
Google's cyber woes in China may aid security firms
BOSTON - Cyber attacks on Google Inc's <GOOG.O> China operations could scare businesses and consumers into spending more on protection, benefiting security companies like McAfee Inc <MFE.N>, Symantec Corp <SYMC.O> and Trend Micro <4704.T>. Hackers frequently succeed in attacking businesses, security experts say, but companies rarely disclose the breaches because they are afraid of damaging their reputations and encouraging criminals.
U.S. court revives antitrust suit on music downloads
NEW YORK - A federal appeals court reinstated on Wednesday an antitrust lawsuit accusing major record labels of conspiring to fix prices for potentially millions of people who download their music over the Internet. The U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York said a federal district judge erred in dismissing the case in October 2008 against defendants that include Bertelsmann AG <BTGGg.F>, EMI Group, Sony Corp <6758.T>, Vivendi SA <VIV.PA> and Warner Music Group Corp <WMG.N> or various affiliates.
