ADVERTISEMENT Mike Massimino and Mike Good planned to begin an upgrade of the power system as well before their six to seven hour spacewalk drew to a close on Friday. The outing was the second of the five daily spacewalks scheduled for the Atlantis astronauts during the 11-day mission to the revolutionary stargazer. The shuttle crew rendezvoused with Hubble on Wednesday and hoisted it into the shuttle's cargo bay for a final makeover intended to extend observations by at least five years. During Thursday's spacewalk, two other spacewalking astronauts installed a powerful new camera and science computer. Those tasks plus the installation of a half dozen new gyros fulfilled the mission's three highest priorities. "I trained my whole life for this," said Massimino, a 46-year-old mechanical engineer who is making his second visit to Hubble. And it must have seemed like it at times. The gyros have to be installed in pairs deep inside the cramped observatory. One of the three new sets would not align properly, forcing the spacewalkers to improvise, drawing out the time required for the critical task. "It felt like it has been aligned a couple of times, but then it doesn't want to go," Good, a 46-year-old US Air Force flight test engineer on his first space voyage, informed Mission Control. "I know it's frustrating, but keep up the great work," shuttle communicator Dan Burbank calmly told Massimino and Good from the control center. "Hopefully, we will get lucky in a minute." Their fortunes changed for the better when the spacewalkers reached for a spare gyro set, equipment that had been removed from the telescope in 1999, then rebuilt on Earth and flown back aboard Atlantis. With some coaxing, the spare fit. "Nice job," said Mission Control. Massimino and Good had floated from the shuttle's airlock at 8:49 am (1249 GMT). The two men gathered tools and headed for the base of the telescope, which juts some 13.2 meters (43.5 feet) out of the shuttle's cargo bay. The two men made quick work of opening the telescope's aft equipment bay to gain access to the gyroscopes. They took turns stretching out on their backs with feet sticking out of the telescope. Then they had to reach up with an extended ratchet tool to remove and replace the gyroscopes. Shuttle astronauts have not worked on Hubble in more than seven years. After the long absence, just three of the fast spinning turbines were functioning as Atlantis reached Hubble. At least two working gyroscopes are required to make astronomical observations. The battery situation aboard the solar powered observatory was equally as dire. The telescope was depending on all six of its original rechargeable batteries to furnish electricity when Hubble was in darkness. Though longer lasting than initially envisioned, the aging batteries were losing their ability to re-charge. The spacewalkers planned to replace three batteries on Friday and three more during a spacewalk on Monday. Astronaut Megan McArthur, as she did on Thursday, controlled the shuttle's robot arm from inside Atlantis to move the astronauts and their tools around the telescope. When the 11-day overhaul mission draws a close, Hubble will be equipped to scan the frontiers of the cosmos for the signs of the earliest star systems, join with other telescopes to unravel the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy as well as investigate the planet forming processes under way around other stars. Early Friday, Mission Control reported a problem with Atlantis' cooling system, a network of radiators that ejects heat from the shuttle's electronics during the launch and descent to Earth. The problem appears to be icing in the water circulation system. Flight controllers switched to a backup circulation system, while they developing a procedure to flush the system of ice. The space telescope, a cooperative program between NASA and the European Space Agency, is used by astronomers from around the world.
