Sign Up News Home - Help Navigation Primary Navigation Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Top Stories Most Popular Secondary Navigation Singapore Asia Pacific World Search Search: IMF to approve $840 mln for Pakistan in June-govt official Reuters - Saturday, May 16 ISLAMABAD, May 15 - The International Monetary Fund will next month recommend the release of $840 million to Pakistan, the third tranche of a loan agreed in November to avert a balance of payment crisis, a Pakistani official said on Friday. ADVERTISEMENT Nuclear-armed Pakistan, a vital ally of the United States as it struggles to bring stability to Afghanistan and defeat al Qaeda, agreed to a $7.6 billion IMF stand-by loan in November. It got $3.1 billion in November and a second tranche of $848 million in April. IMF and Pakistani officials recently met Dubai to review Pakistan's performance for the quarter ending in March and Pakistan met all targets, Finance Ministry chief Shaukat Tarin told a news conference. "Therefore, in a board meeting in mid-June, they will recommend release of a tranche .... which amounts to about $840 million," Tarin said. When approving the second tranche, the IMF said the Pakistan was gradually recovering from the macroeconomic and external imbalances of 2007 and 2008, and a programme aimed at restoring financial stability while protecting the poor was on track. The IMF said this week it had agreed with Pakistan to increase its 2009/10 fiscal deficit target to 4.6 percent of gross domestic product , compared with an original target of 3.4 percent of GDP, in order to boost growth. Tarin said he was able to convince the IMF that Pakistan needed fiscal space after negative growth in the manufacturing sector, that contributes 60 percent of total government revenue, and falling imports. The IMF said easing the deficit target would make it easier for Pakistan to absorb additional donor support without fuelling inflation. Pakistan secured pledges of more than $5 billion in aid over two years at a conference of donors in Japan last month after President Asif Ali Zardari vowed to step up the fight against militants. Tarin said that of the total pledges, about $600 million was in grants and soft loans, $400 million for budgetary support and the rest for financing projects in areas such as poverty reduction, education and health.
