Diversity "gobsmacked" by UK TV talent show win
ADVERTISEMENT
LONDON - Street dance troupe Diversity said on Sunday it was still in shock after beating runaway favorite and Internet sensation Susan Boyle in the final of the popular "Britain's Got Talent" television contest. Boyle, 48, had been heavily backed to beat nine other finalists late on Saturday after clips of her first appearance on the show in April were downloaded nearly 200 million times and she was hailed the world over as a superstar.
Jay Leno bids farewell to "Tonight Show"
LOS ANGELES - Jay Leno bid farewell to "The Tonight Show" on Friday, ending his 17-year run as host with a finale that stayed true to the style that made him the top-rated performer on U.S. late-night television. The main difference was a long ovation that Leno struggled to quiet as he took the stage for an opening monologue that poked fun, as usual, at politicians, celebrities and current events.
Clooney, Hanks urge "yes" vote on actors' contract
LOS ANGELES - Some 500 actors, including prominent stars George Clooney and Tom Hanks, urged members of the largest U.S. actors union to vote "yes" on a new contract with Hollywood's major studios on Friday. In a statement released by the 120,000-member Screen Actors Guild, signers "wholeheartedly recommend that SAG members VOTE YES on our tentative Television and Theatrical Contracts."
Phil Spector gets 19 years to life for murder
LOS ANGELES - Still maintaining his innocence, music producer Phil Spector was sentenced on Friday to at least 19 years in prison for the 2003 murder of a Hollywood actress and could spend the rest of his life behind bars. Spector, 69, who revolutionized pop music in the 1960s with his layered "Wall of Sound" production technique, was convicted in April of second-degree murder after a second trial. The first trial deadlocked in 2007.
God save the brand? Punk musicians power U.K. ads
LONDON - Never mind the bullocks, indeed -- Johnny Rotten and some stampeding cows have started a rush toward punk advertising in the United Kingdom. The Sex Pistols frontman, now known as John Lydon, stars in popular U.K. TV commercials for the butter brand Country Life. Dressed in country-gent tweeds, the one-time scourge of polite society is seen watching traditional English folk dancers, running from cows and declaring, "It's not about Great Britain -- it's about great butter!" with the gusto he once reserved for sneering "I am an anti-Christ/I am an anarchist."
"Idol" castoff Michael Johns to release album
NEW YORK - While the "American Idol" post-season promo drive has kicked into gear for winner Kris Allen and runner-up Adam Lambert, Season 7's Michael Johns will be resurfacing this summer with his first post-"Idol" album. "Hold Back My Heart," due June 23 from TRP Records, is a 12-song set featuring six songs co-written by Johns and Dave Cobb. Diane Warren and British singer-songwriter James Morrison also contributed lyrics to the set.
Angelina Jolie hospitalized briefly for minor injury
LOS ANGELES - Actress Angelina Jolie was hospitalized briefly on Friday after suffering a minor injury while shooting an action sequence in Long Island, New York, for her upcoming film "Salt," the studio behind the film said. Her hospitalization was a "precautionary measure," and she was soon out of the medical facility and back on the set, said a spokesman for Columbia Pictures.
Rhapsody's exclusive ads target music consumers
DENVER - All the TV ads that came out in support of Green Day's new album, "21st Century Breakdown," featured the lead single "Know Your Enemy." But only one advertiser got exclusive footage of the band -- online music service Rhapsody. While it isn't unusual for retailers and other partners to air ads featuring a song clip or music video when promoting a new release, it's rare for artists to film custom footage for them. But Rhapsody executives say the Green Day ad is just the first in what will be a series of TV spots featuring artists with new music coming out, about one every other month. Next on deck is Rob Thomas, with more to follow.
Mykelti Williamson to join cast of '24'
LOS ANGELES - Actor Mykelti Williamson is joining Fox's "24" as a regular. On the series' upcoming eighth season, set in New York, he will play Brian Hastings, the head of CTU New York and a man of razor-sharp intellect.
"All in the Family" scribe Mickey Ross dies
LOS ANGELES . They worked on "The Martha Raye Show" and there developed a relationship with Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin, the creators of the landmark "All in the Family" sitcom for CBS.
