The Taiwan dollar <TWD=TP> weakened to T$32.935 against the U.S. dollar as of 0146 GMT, slightly off the previous close of T$32.925. The currency has been trading in a narrow range over the past few weeks, as investors waited for a clearer direction in the local stock market and further signs of an economic recovery. Volume on the main Taipei Forex Inc exchange was thin at $51 million after 45 minutes of trade, much lower than the $107 million recorded the same time on Friday. "The stock market was not faring well today, and the U.S. dollar didn't move a lot last Friday, so the Taiwan dollar will probably be little moved today," said a dealer in Taipei. Taiwan stocks <.TWII> lost steam after opening higher, falling 0.57 percent by 0147 GMT on Monday and pulling back from a two-week closing high touched the previous session. "Although the Taiwan dollar still has a chance to strengthen, the central bank wants it to stay weak because exporters will need to exchange into more Taiwan dollars near the end of the first half of the year," said another dealer at a local bank. Exporters usually need more Taiwan dollar near the end of the month and the quarter to meet cash needs at home. The central bank, which keeps the local currency in a managed float, prefers to keep the Taiwan dollar weak to help the island's recession-hit exporters. In the non-deliverable forwards market, six month NDFs narrowed to -0.500/-0.450 from -0.520/-0.470 in the previous session, indicating investors now bet the Taiwan dollar would strengthen by a smaller degree in half a year. On the smaller Cosmos exchange <COSMOS1>, the Taiwan dollar weakened to T$32.933 to the U.S. dollar from the previous close of T$32.924.
