"Angels & Demons" set for glitzy Rome premiere
ADVERTISEMENT
ROME - After exposing a Church cover-up in "The Da Vinci Code," symbologist Robert Langdon returns to the big screen as an unlikely Vatican ally in the latest movie adaptation of a novel by author Dan Brown. "Angels & Demons," again starring Tom Hanks as Langdon and directed by Ron Howard, premieres in Rome on Monday at a theater a mile away from Vatican City.
Eric Bana's "beast" love rivals his acting passion
NEW YORK - Eric Bana, star of movies such as "Troy" and "Munich," let New Yorkers in on a different slice of his seemingly glitzy life this week at the Tribeca Film Festival -- his passion for cars and motor racing. The green monster of 2003's "Hulk" who returns to movie screens on May 8 in big-budget "Star Trek," has made his directing debut with a documentary revolving around his love of cars. Although, he says, it truly deals with friendship and having interests in life other than just work and career.
A grown-up Matthew McConaughey faces his "Ghosts"
LOS ANGELES - Moviemaking has finally collided with real life for formerly freewheeling actor Matthew McConaughey, not only in his new romantic comedy "The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," but in his career choices, too. In "Ghosts," which debuts in U.S. theaters on Friday, the actor plays a man who bids farewell to bachelorhood, which seems appropriate for the 39-year-old who recently bought a house in Malibu, settled down with his girlfriend Camila Alves, and welcomed his first child, Levi, into the world.
French band Phoenix rising on U.S. indie scene
NEW YORK - The French rock band Phoenix signed with New York-based Glassnote Records in February with a couple of lofty goals: to play at a major festival and to perform on "Saturday Night Live." Not long after booking slots at June's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Tennessee and the Austin City Limits Music Festival in October, Glassnote founder/CEO Daniel Glass got a call from someone at "SNL" asking about the band's schedule.
Coldplay to give away live CD at gigs
LONDON - Coldplay will give a live CD away for free to fans at gigs during their coming tour of North America, underlining the dwindling financial importance for successful groups of selling physical records. The group, who had 2008's biggest-selling pop album with "Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends," kick off their summer tour on May 15th.
Duffy named Britain's first female poet laureate
LONDON - Carol Ann Duffy was named Britain's Poet Laureate Friday, the first woman to hold the royal post in its 341-year history. The 53-year-old, born in Glasgow, Scotland, said she had thought "long and hard" about accepting the position, seen by some as a poisoned chalice due to the public scrutiny that comes with it.
Tribeca film targets hypocrisy in U.S. gay politics
NEW YORK - A documentary called "Outrage" argues that closeted homosexual U.S. politicians who vote against the interests of gays and lesbians should be "outed" because their hypocrisy has slowed the progress of gay rights. Written and directed by Kirby Dick, the film relies on interviews with people who claim to have had gay relationships with politicians who vote against gay marriage, hate crime legislation, gays in the military, and funding for HIV/AIDS research.
Disney conjures up more "Wizards"
LOS ANGELES - The Disney Channel is grooming "Wizards of Waverly Place" as its next blockbuster tween franchise in the mold of "High School Musical" and "Hannah Montana." The cable channel has picked up a third season of the hit comedy series starring Selena Gomez and has unveiled an original telefilm, "Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie," to premiere in August.
Carrey eyed for lead in "Beaver"
NEW YORK - Jim Carrey has emerged as a leading candidate to star in "The Beaver," an offbeat comedy-drama that centers on the relationship between a man and a beaver puppet he wears on his arm. Kyle Killen's script has generated enormous interest in film development circles, drawing comparisons to "Being John Malkovich" and "Lars and the Real Girl."
Iranian, U.S. films win top Tribeca festival awards
NEW YORK " won the Best Narrative Feature and Marshall Curry's "Racing Dreams" took out the Best Documentary Feature. The directors, who have previously shown films at Tribeca, were each awarded $25,000.
