"We're still doing well," Asustek Chairman Jonney Shih told reporters after a news conference. "The U.S. is a very important market for us and we keep ourselves informed on issues, but we don't see any price wars breaking out now," he said. Shih made the comments after major U.S. electronics retailer Circuit City (CC.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) filed for bankruptcy protection just weeks before the start of the holiday shopping season. Asustek shares closed 2.91 percent lower on Tuesday, underperforming the benchmark TAIEX share index .TWII, which fell 2.15 percent. Asustek shares have fallen more than 16 percent since it announced third-quarter results on October 30, while the TAIEX has dropped less than 1 percent in the same period. The company is the world's top maker of motherboards, the central circuit board used in all computers, but also competes with Hewlett-Packard (HPQ.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), Dell (DELL.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and crosstown rival Acer (2353.TW: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) under the Asus brand for its laptops. Asustek previously gave a cautious outlook for the current October-December quarter, revising downwards its shipment target for conventional laptops, citing the current financial crisis and slower growth.
