China retail sales up 22.0 percent in October: govt
AFP - 2 hours 39 minutes ago
BEIJING (AFP) - - China's retail sales grew by 22.0 percent in October from a year ago to one trillion yuan (146.4 billion dollars), the National Bureau of Statistics said Wednesday.
The figures slowed down slightly from 23.2 percent recorded in September but remained strong considering China is increasingly feeling the impact of the global economic crisis.
China's economy grew at its slowest pace in five years in the third quarter.
In the first 10 months of the year, retail sales expanded by 22.0 percent to 8.8 trillion yuan, the bureau said in a statement, compared with growth of 16.1 percent in the same period last year.
Retail sales are the main gauge for consumer spending in the world's fourth-largest economy. The growth in October came as inflation fell to a 17-month low of 4.0 percent, according to data released on Tuesday.
The country's fast economic growth has generally relied heavily on fast expansion in exports and investment.
Beijing has been working for years to lift private consumption in a bid to balance China's growth pattern, an increasingly top priority as exports are expected to weaken amid the global downturn.
The country's exports in October rose 19.2 percent from a year ago to 128.3 billion dollars, compared with 21.5 percent growth in September, according to data from the Customs Administration released on Tuesday.
In its latest move aimed at boosting domestic consumer demand, the government unveiled a 586-billion-dollar stimulus package at the weekend that will increase spending on infrastructure and other sectors.
