"District 9" no alien to Oscar buzz
LOS ANGELES bucked conventional Hollywood wisdom by proudly wearing its message on its alien sleeve and slyly combining an apartheid allegory with a good dose of action.
Confusion surrounds Robbie Williams "proposal"
LONDON - British singer Robbie Williams "proposed" to his actress girlfriend, Ayda Field, live on Australian radio on Friday, but his spokesman then said it was a joke. Adding to the confusion, Williams' mother Jan later told British radio that the 35-year-old star intended to marry Field "in the not-too-distant future."
Indie Spirit Awards hit milestone 25th year
LOS ANGELES - When organizers for the independent film world's Spirit Awards unveil nominees for its honors this coming Tuesday, they will be doing more than just singling out top movies in the low-budget, art house arena. The members of Film Independent, the group that sponsors the Spirits, will be putting its first touches on celebrating 25 years of honoring movies that once were dismissed by Hollywood studios but now are the stuff of Oscar legend.
Top 10 movie flops of the decade
LOS ANGELES - Movie flops aren't just about losing money. Yes, big budgets that go bust are one consideration. But flops are also about lofty expectations dashed and high profiles brought low. They trigger embarrassing catcalls from the peanut gallery and a general whoever-thought-that-was-a-good-idea-in-the-first-place bewilderment. Any judgments of flopitude are necessarily subjective, but here are 10 movies from the past decade that made those few moviegoers who saw them cringe. Disagree? Talk among yourselves.
Swiss will not release Polanski before Monday
ZURICH - Swiss authorities will not release Roman Polanski into house arrest at his luxury Alpine chalet until Monday at the earliest as bail conditions still have to be met. A spokesman for the Justice Department said on Friday Polanski would not be allowed to travel to his holiday home in the ski resort of Gstaad until next week. The department will issue a statement as soon as he is freed, the spokesman said.
Luc Besson says the French are his harshest critics
STOCKHOLM - French film director Luc Besson, known worldwide for blockbusters like "The Big Blue" and "The Fifth Element," says his movies face the toughest criticism at home where they are seen as not quite "French enough." The spiky-haired director told Reuters on Friday that he had sometimes struggled with skepticism and narrow-mindedness when trying to find support for his film projects in France.
Bob Dylan brings Christmas cheer to those without homes
LONDON - Singer Bob Dylan reminisces about Christmas past, turkey dinners and his favorite holiday songs in a rare interview in a magazine for homeless people. The 68-year-old singer has baffled fans and critics with his new album "Christmas in the Heart" -- a collection of carols and traditional yuletide songs delivered in his croaking voice.
Hollywood's mansion of magic celebrates 100 years
LOS ANGELES - One hundred years ago, a wealthy couple built a mansion in Hollywood and installed a speaking tube allowing them to order a Scotch whisky from their servants -- a handy trick, but nothing compared to what the home's later occupants would conjure up. Today under the name The Magic Castle, the mansion is a private club for magicians that has been around for 46 years, and is known by tricksters all over the world.
Oprah to visit White House for Christmas special
LOS ANGELES - The queen of daytime will interview the president of the United States during an ABC holiday special that brings together Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama. The network has announced that it will "Christmas at the White House: An Oprah Primetime Special" on Sunday, December 13, at 10 p.m. The show will feature an interview with the president, a conversation with the first couple and a tour of the White House. The special also will go behind the scenes as staffers prepare the White House for the holiday season.
A Minute With: Director Lee Daniels on his "Precious"
LOS ANGELES - "Precious: Based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire," directed by Lee Daniels, is generating a large amount of Oscar buzz this season and getting a push from executive producers Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry. Prior to this film, Daniels was best known for producing "Monster's Ball" in which he cast Halle Berry in the role of a downtrodden, small town waitress that saw her make history when she became the first black woman to win a best actress Oscar.
