LONDON (AFP) - – Iranian rights activist Shirin Ebadi insisted on Friday that Tehran had confiscated her Nobel Peace Prize medal and rejected accusations about her tax affairs after her assets were frozen. Ebadi, an outspoken critic of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's regime, accused Iranian authorities of lying when they denied seizing the Nobel laureate's medal she won in 2003 -- and said they were trying to silence her. Iran denied confiscating the award from a bank deposit box, although the foreign ministry implicitly confirmed that Ebadi's assets had been blocked on the grounds that no tax had been paid on them. "They are not telling the truth," Ebadi told BBC World Service radio in an interview in London. "They seized my bank account and stopped my retirement pension and also my husband's bank account and pension. "My husband also had a deposit box in the bank and in that was my Nobel Prize and the medal of the Legion d'Honneur," she said, referring to France's top honour. Speaking through a translator, she added: "The Nobel Prize was in the deposit box in Tejarat bank and they seized that deposit box." Iran is demanding about 400,000 dollars (270,000 euros) in back taxes on the Nobel prize money of about 1.3 million dollars. But Ebadi, a 62-year-old human rights lawyer, dismissed the claim. "The Iranian authorities are not telling the truth because according to our tax laws, there is no tax payable on the Nobel Prize," she said. "Assuming they are telling the truth and I have to pay tax on this prize, why have they confiscated and seized the box belonging to my husband? "Besides, the order to seize our bank accounts should have come from the tax authorities and the order to seize the box came from the Revolutionary Court." A founding member of Ebadi's human rights group, Mohammad Ali Dadkhah, told AFP that seizing the assets was a "politicised" act. "Blocking and confiscation should be the decision of a court where evidence is presented for such an act," he said. "It is politicised." Norway, the home country of the Nobel prizes, has accused Iran of confiscating Ebadi's Nobel medal and diploma and summoned the Islamic republic's envoy in Oslo to protest at the seizure. It is the first time in Nobel history that a medal has been confiscated. In Tehran, the foreign ministry summoned the Norwegian ambassador to protest "meddling comments made by the Norwegian foreign minister in defence of Shirin Ebadi's illegal acts of tax evasion," state television's website reported. An unnamed official said such comments were based on "inaccurate and unfounded information," adding that "Iran has its own tax laws and confronting those who violate these laws is an internal matter." Ebadi told another interviewer she would not cave in to pressure from the Islamic republic. "Iranian officials want to put pressure on me in this way but it is not working," she said, according to the website of Radio Farda, a Farsi-language service that broadcasts from Europe to Iran. "If the Islamic republic is angry about the publication of human rights reports, they would do better by improving the human rights situation," she told the US-funded radio station. Another member of Ebadi's Human Rights Defenders Centre, Mohammad Seifzadeh, said the assets freeze was aimed at putting pressure on Ebadi "so that she will be banned from leaving Iran under the pretext of tax evasion whenever she returns." Ebadi has not returned to Iran since leaving the country a day before the presidential elections in June to attend a three-day seminar in Spain. The disputed election result sparked mass opposition protests and a crackdown from the regime. "When I wanted to return to Iran, foreign correspondents had been expelled and a lot of people had been arrested. "My colleagues there told me it is more useful if I stay abroad and disseminate information about events there," she said. But she vowed to return home soon. "When I believe my presence in Iran would be more useful I will return. And I don't think it will be too long before I do," she added.
