Former Alice in Chains rocker Mike Starr dies
LOS ANGELES - Former Alice in Chains bass player Mike Starr, who went public with his drug problems on the reality TV show "Celebrity Rehab," was found dead in a Salt Lake City house, police said on Tuesday, nine years after the rock band's singer died of an overdose. Starr was 44. A spokesman for the Salt Lake City Police Dept. said officers responded to a call about a possible body at a residence southwest of downtown earlier in the afternoon.
NPR chief resigns amid controversy
WASHINGTON - The head of National Public Radio resigned on Wednesday after the organization's chief fund-raiser was secretly videotaped criticizing conservatives and questioning whether NPR needs its government funding. The resignation of president and chief executive officer Vivian Schiller came as Republicans in Congress, some of whom have long opposed what they see as NPR's liberal bias, were targeting public broadcasting as an area for budget cuts.
Mel Gibson reaches plea deal in domestic abuse case
LOS ANGELES - Actor Mel Gibson is expected to plead no contest to a charge of battery and avoid jail time for the domestic abuse claim made by his ex-girlfriend, a source close to the case told Reuters on Wednesday. Celebrity news website TMZ.com, citing unidentified people connected to the Los Angeles District Attorney, reported that the "Braveheart" actor and director will appear in court on Friday to enter his plea, which is equivalent to guilty.
Spider-Man musical overhauled, delayed again-report
NEW YORK - The $65 million "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" Broadway musical will undergo an overhaul that will shut it down for several weeks and cause a three-month delay in its opening date, the New York Times reported. The troubled show, created by director Julie Taymor with music written by U2's Bono and The Edge, was due to open on March 15. But is unlikely now to open until June, causing its sixth delay, while it holds new rehearsals and gives the cast a break from preview performances, the Times said.

LOS ANGELES - If you think Charlie Sheen has been "winning" media attention these past few weeks, you'd be right. The now former "Two and A Half Men" star has topped all Internet and social media discussions since the beginning of 2011, beating out buzz and controversy surrounding the iPad, singer Lady Gaga and U.S. President Barack Obama, according to a survey released on Tuesday by the Global Language Monitor.
Abbey Road studios launch 80th anniversary contest
LONDON - Abbey Road Studios in London, where the Beatles recorded most of their hits, has launched a global anthem competition to mark its 80th anniversary this year. The studios, opened in 1931 by composer Edward Elgar with a performance of his patriotic song "Land of Hope and Glory," are looking for original, undiscovered writers who will compete for the chance to record their compositions at Abbey Road.
Avril Lavigne more "emotional," "raw" on new album
LONDON - Canadian singer Avril Lavigne says her fourth album "Goodbye Lullaby," released in the United States on Tuesday, shows a different side to the petulant pop-punkster image she has perfected in the past. "It is a more emotional, more raw record," Lavigne told Reuters in a recent interview in London to discuss Goodbye Lullaby, released by Sony Music's RCA Records label.
