Malawi court allows Madonna to adopt second child

BLANTYRE - U.S. pop star Madonna was allowed on Friday to adopt a second child from Malawi, although the father of the 4-year-old girl said he wants her back, a plea likely to stir fresh controversy for the singer. Malawi's Supreme Court overturned a lower court ruling in April which said Madonna could not adopt Mercy James because she was not a resident of the southern African country.

Second autopsy of Carradine suggests no suicide
LOS ANGELES - A forensic pathologist who oversaw a second autopsy on "Kung Fu" star David Carradine's body at the direction of his family suggested on Friday that the death was not a suicide but declined to say why. Dr. Michael Baden told Reuters that the actor's family wants to withhold details until a full investigation is completed.

LONDON - Dracula actor Christopher Lee and British golfer Nick Faldo will receive knighthoods in the Queen's Birthday Honours List -- and a 93-year-old station master gets a nod too. The 87-year-old Lee, famed for his role as the blood-sucking Count in the Hammer horror movie classics, has found popularity with more modern audiences by starring in the "Lord of the Rings" and "Star Wars" trilogies.

LOS ANGELES - Clint Eastwood has holed up on Hollywood Boulevard waiting for John Wayne and busloads of visitors to join him, as Madame Tussauds prepares to open its latest wax museum in the tourist mecca this summer. The $55 million complex, featuring more than 100 celebrity waxworks spread across three floors, is the biggest attraction to join the teeming thoroughfare in years.

LOS ANGELES - Conan O'Brien ruled late-night television in his first week hosting "The Tonight Show," but viewers deserted him as the days progressed, complete ratings numbers released on Thursday showed. O'Brien averaged 6.1 million viewers a night last week during his much-hyped opening stand on NBC's "The Tonight Show," compared to an average of 3.5 million viewers for his main competitor, CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman."
Graffiti star Banksy in secret art launch
LONDON - Anonymous graffiti artist Banksy, who enjoys a cult following around the world, has returned to his home town of Bristol in western England to launch his biggest exhibition to date. Typically for a man who keeps his identity secret, the whole project has been shrouded in mystery, with media, local councilors and even staff at the museum only finding out about the project on Friday, the day before it was due to open.
With digital transition, more focus on smaller TVs
WASHINGTON - The Friday deadline for a nationwide transition from analog to crisper digital television transmission has U.S. retailers hoping for a boost in sales of smaller TVs as consumers upgrade secondary sets in spare rooms. The digital transition has already unleashed a surge in sales of converter boxes to consumers who want to keep their existing TV sets, and an uptick in cable and satellite TV service sales for Americans who want to upgrade.

Keyboardist, producer Beckett dies in Tennessee
NASHVILLE, Tennessee - Producer and keyboard player Barry Beckett, who recorded and accompanied singers Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, Paul Simon and numerous country music stars, has died, his family said on Friday. Beckett, 66, died at his Hendersonville, Tennessee, home on Wednesday, his family said. He had been diagnosed with cancer and suffered strokes, according to local media.
