By 0212 GMT, the main TAIEX share index <.TWII> had risen 45.63 points to 6,478.18, following a one-week closing low on Tuesday. The automobile sub-index <.TAUI> and tourism sub-index <THOI> rose 4 percent and 1.7 percent, respectively. Leading car maker Yulon Motor <2201.TW> jumped 4.76 percent while hotel operator Ambassador Hotel <2704.TW> advanced 4.51 percent. Taiwanese government ministries have agreed to new regulations that will allow the Chinese to invest broadly in the island from June at the latest, including manufacturing industries, such as autos and textiles, and service sectors such as shipping and tourism. [ID:nTP148757] However, flat panel and contract chip manufacturing sectors will still be blocked to Chinese investors, with analysts saying that the move was aimed at protecting Taiwan's strategic technology sector. "The news is positive in the longer term, but still a lot of investors stayed on the sidelines after a recent sharp rise in the market," said Andrew Deng, a vice president at Taiwan International Securities. The market had jumped about 19 percent in previous sessions as investors bet on potential investments from China. The transportation sub-index <.TTPI> rose 1.81 percent, further boosted after news that three major Chinese shipping companies plan to invest in the biggest Taiwanese port in Kaohsiung, a top port official said on Tuesday. [ID:nTP274707] The financial sub-index <.TFNI> was up 1.53 percent, with Chinatrust Financial <2891.TW>, Taiwan's top credit card issuer, 2.35 percent higher. Chinatrust said late on Tuesday it plans to issue up to 2.5 billion shares via a private placement to strengthen its capital base, raising up to T$48 billion based on its latest closing price. [ID:nTP229950] In the tech sector, Hon Hai <2317.TW> fell 2.33 percent, extending losses a day earlier after its April sales dropped from a month ago. Shares of Acer <2353.TW> inched up 0.17 percent despite its April sales falling from the previous month. [ID:nTP226989] "Tech shares are weak because some of their April sales came under expectations, forcing investors to adjust their previous optimistic outlook on those companies," said Deng, who expected the market to trade between 6,400-6,550 points for the rest of the week. TSMC <2330.TW> <TSM.N>, the world's largest contract chip maker, rose 0.72 percent, while the broader semiconductor <.TSII> sub-index was up 0.71 percent. TSMC shares gained after some sector bellwethers gave encouraging comments. Chief executive of Intel Corp <INTC.O> said the company's orders and billing patterns so far in the second quarter have been slightly better than expected.
