Home U.S. World Entertainment Sports Business Health Science Technology Politics Offbeat Environment Travel   News Articles Three Congressional Panels To Hold Hearings On Failed Christmas Terror Plot December 29, 2009 9:50 a.m. EST | More Topics: Politics, United States   Kris Alingod - AHN Contributor Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) - Three committees in Congress will begin their new year with hearings to determine if security lapses led to the Christmas Day terror attempt on a Northwest Airlines plane bound for Detroit. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman (I-CT) will convene a hearing to find out how "a terrorist who evaded our homeland security defenses." He has said the failed plot has exposed two vulnerabilities in airport security: names of passengers on international flights headed to the United States are checked against a small database of terror suspects and not the nation's broadest list, and not enough passengers are required to go through whole body image scanners that could detect hidden explosives. "Our Committee's inquiry will focus on identifying information-sharing and analysis gaps as well as any other security breakdowns," Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), the top Republican in the panel, said in a statement. The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee will hold hearings next month as well. Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), former head of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said over the weekend, "The White House has reached out to me and I have been in touch with other appropriate authorities about the incident." In the House, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MI), chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, has announced an inquiry on the attempt, "whether directly related to al Qaeda or not." "The Committee will get to the bottom of what did and did not happen...and what security precautions need to take place in the future," the congressman added. President Barack Obama sought to assure the nation on Monday in a brief address from Hawaii, where he is vacationing with his family. "A full investigation has been launched into this attempted act of terrorism and we will not rest until we find all who were involved and hold them accountable," he said from Kaneohe Bay Marine Base. "The American people should be assured that we are doing everything in our power to keep you and your families safe and secure during this busy holiday season." Obama said he has ordered reviews of the nation's terror watch list system and the screening policies. "The suspect in the Christmas incident was in the system, but not on a watch list such as the so-called no-fly list. So I've ordered a thorough review not only of how information related to the subject was handled, but of the overall watch list system and how it can be strengthened," he said. A passenger on Northwest flight 253 from Amsterdam to Michigan last Friday set off an explosive device but was subdued by other passengers and crew members. The passenger, 23-year-old Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, has been charged with attempting to destroy a Northwest plane using a destructive device. According to the FBI, Abdulmutallab went to the bathroom of the plane during the flight for 20 minutes before "popping noises similar to firecrackers" were heard by passengers. A part of the wall of the aircraft was in flames when Abdulmutallab was subdued using blankets and fire extinguishers were used to put out the flames. Preliminary findings show that the explosive used by Abdulmutallab was PETN, or pentaerythritol. Homeland Security Sec. Janet Napolitano has said there is no evidence that Abdulmutallab's attempt was part of a larger terror plot. "Right now, we have no indication that it's part of anything larger, but obviously the investigation continues... it would be inappropriate to speculate as to whether or not he has such ties," she said on CNN on Sunday. Napolitano is facing questions about her fitness to lead the nation's homeland security, having also told CNN, "One thing I'd like to point out is that the system worked. Everybody played an important role here. So the whole process of making sure that we respond properly, correctly and effectively went very smoothly." She sought to clarify her remark on Monday and told NBC's "Today," "Our system did not work in this instance." | More Copyright © 2003 - 2009 AHN - All rights reserved.Redistribution, republication. syndication, rewriting or broadcast is prohibited without the prior written consent of AHN.License AHN news for your website, business, digital signage network or publication.
