Rod Blagojevich has begun the new year with his trademark flair, welcoming his being named the no. 2 spot top Elvis impersonator of all time and dismissing President Barack Obama as "phony." In an interview with Esquire released on Monday, the Democrat continues to vigorously defend himself from charges of corruption, and reveals that he has resorted to reality shows and impersonations to support his family. "They didn't stop a crime spree," the 53-year-old says, referring to pay-to-play allegations against him, including trying to sell the former Senate seat of the President. "They stopped a routine political deal that would've put five hundred thousand people to work... someone's lying here, about whether I'm selling that Senate seat for financial gain, or whether I was positioning and working to try to get a political deal that would benefit the people." "It's such a cynical business, and most of the people in the business are full of s*** and phonies, but I was real, man - and am real," Blagojevich adds. "This guy [Obama], he was catapulted in on hope and change, what we hope the guy is. What the ****? Everything he's saying's on the teleprompter. I'm blacker than Barack Obama. I shined shoes. I grew up in a five-room apartment. My father had a little laundromat in a black community not far from where we lived. I saw it all growing up." Blagojevich was impeached last January after a unanimous vote from all 59 members of the Illinois Senate. He was indicted in April on 16 felony counts, including racketeering conspiracy and extortion conspiracy, along with his brother, Rob, former chief of staff Jonn Harris, associate Alonzo Monk, and fundraisers William Cellini and Christopher Kelly. The former governor has not shied away from the media following his fall from grace. The same month as his indictment, he sought a judge's approval to be part of an NBC reality show set in Costa Rica. In September, he released a memoir, "The Governor," that claims White House chief of staff, former Rep. Rahm Emanuel, had asked him if he could appoint a placeholder to the vacant House seat so Emanuel could return to Congress in 2010. Last week, Time named him the no. 2 Elvis impersonator in a top 10 list to mark the American icon's 75th birthday. A spokesman, Glenn Selig, had issued a release saying the former governor"has added another accomplishment to his distinguished resume." Blagojevich allegedly conspired with the other defendants and convicted lobbyist Tony Rezko beginning in 2002 and until after he was first elected as governor to "use the offices of governor and chief of staff for financial gain." Authorities say he attempted to raise $100,000 in campaign contributions from a "Racetrack Executive" in return for his signing into law of a bill directing a portion of casino revenues the horse racing industry. He was said to be looking to receive the campaign contributions before the end of the year because a new ethics law prohibiting political contributions from state contractors was scheduled to take effect on the first day of 2009. He had also allegedly received "substantial campaign fundraising assistance" from individuals seeking the appointment to fill the Senate seat of Obama. The individuals included "Senate Candidate A," whose associate offered $1.5 million in campaign money in exchange for an appointment. Blagojevich, who appointed Roland Burris to the President's Senate seat, has pleaded not guilty. His trial begins on June 3.
