Source: AHN Reporter: Tejinder Singh Location: Washington, D.C., United States Published: January 29, 2011 1:55 p.m. EST Topics: Politics, Defense, Diplomacy, International Relations, Armed Forces, Political Development The visiting Egyptian delegation of 25 members including senior officials and their advisors returned home Friday night as the situation in Egypt deteriorated with continued protests, according to the Pentagon. “The 27th Annual U.S.-Egypt Military Cooperation Committee (MCC) adjourned this morning after the Egyptian delegation was called home by its government,” said Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan in a statement. “The current situation in Egypt arose very quickly, but Ambassador (Alexander) Vershbow did have the opportunity to urge restraint to his Egyptian counterpart during the Wednesday and Thursday meetings here in the Pentagon.” The Egyptian delegation arriving for a two-part visit, completed the first part - the MCC, which began Wednesday, and was scheduled for two and one-half days. “The schedule was accelerated to end early today so the Egyptian delegation could return home,” Lapan said. The U.S. side was led by Vershbow, the assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, while visiting delegation was spearheaded by Egyptian Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Sami Hafez Enan. The second part of the visit was sponsored by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Michael Mullen. “The Egyptian delegation was to begin with cultural events and dinners this weekend, and continue with meetings with the Chairman as well as each of the military service chiefs until next Wednesday,” disclosed Lapan.“ Only a smaller part of the delegation was scheduled to participate, including Lt. Gen. Enan.” The MCC is the highest-level U.S.-Egypt dialogue on defense and strategic issues. The meeting place alternates between the U.S. and Egypt. The MCC typically includes several sub-committees that focus on issues such as security assistance, training, exercises and defense industrial cooperation according to officials. The United States provides $1.3 billion annually in military assistance to its longtime ally, and officials said 625 American military personnel are stationed in Egypt.
