India wants BlackBerry access from companies: report
NEW DELHI - The Indian government is talking to companies using Research in Motion's <RIM.TO>'s BlackBerry to gain access to their employees' secure communications when it is deemed necessary, an official told the Wall Street Journal. Home Secretary G.K. Pillai also said reports that BlackBerry could be blocked if the government's security concerns over the device were not met by the end of January were overblown, according to the paper.
China's Huawei sets up cyber security center in Britain
SHANGHAI - China's top telecommunications equipment maker Huawei Technologies <HWT.UL> said on Monday that it has established a security center in Britain to allow its products and software to be examined and tested. Huawei, which has seen its plans for global expansion crimped by national security concerns among foreign governments, hopes that its Cyber Security Evaluation Center, opened last month in Britain's Banbury, will allay those fears.
PayPal suspends WikiLeaks donations account
WASHINGTON - Online payment service PayPal said it has suspended the WikiLeaks' account that the organization used to collect donations. U.S.-based PayPal said in a statement that WikiLeaks, which this week released thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic cables, had violated its policy. A posting on WikiLeaks' Twitter page said "PayPal bans WikiLeaks after US government pressure."
Limewire music-sharing service to close December 31
NEW YORK - LimeWire -- one of the world's biggest outlets for people to share music, movies and TV shows free of charge over the Internet -- said it would be shutting down by the end of the year and closing its sole office in New York. In October, a U.S. federal judge granted the music industry's request to shut down the popular LimeWire file-sharing service, which had been found liable for copyright infringement.
Google to buy anti-piracy software firm Widevine
CHICAGO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> has agreed to buy Seattle-based anti-piracy software firm Widevine in a bid to boost its online video services, the world's dominant Internet search company said on its official blog. No price was disclosed, but the software firm has raised more than $65 million from investors including Cisco Systems <CSCO.O>, the Seattle Times reported on Friday.
Top papers to charge online, but how?
NEW YORK/LONDON - Three of the world's most influential newspapers have finally come to terms with the notion that charging readers online is the only way to survive. There is far less agreement on how to go about that, the publishers of The New York Times, The Times of London and the Financial Times made clear at this week's Reuters Global Media Summit.
Game industry in flux, investors watch and wait
SAN FRANCISCO - Video game publishers say they have positioned themselves to capitalize on the future of digital entertainment. Investors will need more convincing. The heads of the major U.S. game makers, speaking this week at the Reuters Global Media Summit, explained why the battering from investors was unwarranted.
Google ends Street View trespass case, pays $1
NEW YORK - Google Inc <GOOG.O> admitted to trespassing, but will pay just $1 to resolve a lawsuit over its use of photos of a couple's Pennsylvania home for its Street View mapping service. The agreement ends a case brought by Aaron and Christine Boring, who said the Internet search company violated their privacy by photographing their Pittsburgh home and swimming pool without their permission. They said the home sits on a street clearly marked "Private Road."
Mobile firms seeing ads coming to handsets
PARIS - The long awaited uptake of the potentially lucrative mobile advertising market by advertisers and consumers has actually started to happen, companies from Canada, Egypt and Poland said on Friday. Advertisers have great hopes for the cellphone market due to the personal nature of phones and the potential to know where customers are at any time, but have been held back by the small screen size and potential hostility from customers.
Universal opens virtual stage
LOS ANGELES - Reflecting the increased interest in virtual production following the success of "Avatar" and "Alice in Wonderland," Universal Studios has opened Universal Virtual Stage 1 on its lot. Representing an investment of $4.5 million and counting, UVS1 is a pre-rigged, pre-calibrated virtual production setup with technologies for applications including motion capture and camera tracking.
