Hollywood updates Facebook in lineup of fall movies
LOS ANGELES - "Social media" is among today's most popular catch phrases thanks to the success of, among other things, networking website Facebook -- the favored way for today's youth to communicate on a global level. Now Facebook is the subject of what's expected to be the fall's most anticipated movie, "The Social Network," which is among a slew of titles including "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" and the Clint Eastwood-directed "Hereafter" that Hollywood will usher into theaters this fall movie season.
Venice festival honors Chinese director John Woo
VENICE - The Venice film festival on Friday honored Hong Kong director John Woo, one of the few Asian filmmakers to enjoy box office success in Hollywood as well as at home. The 64-year-old was awarded a lifetime achievement Golden Lion at the world's oldest film festival on the same day it showcased his latest film "Reign of Assassins," which he co-directed with Su Chao-Pin and also produced.
Top directors headlining Telluride film fest
LOS ANGELES - Directors Peter Weir, Danny Boyle, Mark Romanek and Errol Morris will headline the Telluride Film Festival, the annual Labor Day holiday weekend event that kicks off Friday in the Colorado mountain resort. Romanek's "Never Let Me Go," based on the Kazuo Ishiguro novel, will screen Friday night. Keira Knightley, Andrew Garfield and Carey Mulligan star in the film, which Fox Searchlight will also show at next week's Toronto film festival before a theatrical release September 15.
Sofia Coppola takes insider's look at Hollywood A-lister
VENICE - Sofia Coppola's latest movie is a Hollywood insider's look at the life of an A-list actor -- five star hotels and Ferraris, adoration and sexual advances, but also loneliness, tiresome media attention and boredom. "Somewhere" is part comedy and part examination of a man's personal crisis, as Johnny Marco, played by Stephen Dorff, is finally forced to face the question of where a life so enviable on the surface is ultimately heading.
Brendan Fraser heads to Broadway with "Elling"
NEW YORK - Brendan Fraser will make his Broadway debut in the upcoming comedy "Elling," alongside Denis O'Hare, Jennifer Coolidge and Richard Easton, the play's producers said on Thursday. The show, which earned wide acclaim in London's West End, is based on the popular Norwegian novels that tell of a pair of mismatched roommates, their friendship and their relationships with pizza, poetry and women.
Fishburne's porn-star daughter avoiding dark side
LOS ANGELES - Before summer began, no one had heard of Montana Fishburne. But the daughter of Oscar-nominated actor Laurence Fishburne, now the main guy on "CSI," was eager to make a name for herself. On August 18, Vivid Entertainment released the aptly titled adult feature "Montana Fishburne." Mission accomplished. With the movie perched atop Adult Video News' weekly sales chart, Fishburne has been fielding offers ranging from television and a book to ringtones. For better or worse, it seems the 18-year-old newly minted adult film star has broken into the business. She recently spoke about the adult entertainment industry and her plans to outgrow it.

Stranded actor Paul Hogan in Australia tax deal
SYDNEY - Actor Paul Hogan, star of the "Crocodile Dundee" movies, has struck a deal with Australia's tax office which will allow him to return home to his family in Los Angeles, his lawyer said on Friday. Hogan, 70, has been barred from leaving Australia for nearly two weeks after the Australian Taxation Office served him with a departure-prohibition order while he was in the country to attend his 101-year-old mother's funeral.
Toronto film fest boss stays cool under pressure
TORONTO - The famously unflappable Cameron Bailey is looking a touch puzzled, and has for weeks. The Toronto International Film Festival co-director is standing in his Carlton Street office, studying a giant film schedule as if it were an abstract gallery painting.
Rapper T.I. arrested for drug possession in LA
LOS ANGELES - Rapper T.I. has been released from jail after being arrested on suspicion of possessing ecstasy, police said on Thursday. T.I. whose real name is Clifford Harris Jr., 29, was arrested with his wife on Sunset Boulevard Wednesday night after police smelled marijuana coming from a car in which the Grammy award-winning rapper was a passenger.
