Hurricane Paloma makes landfall in Cuba: meteorologists
AFP - 37 minutes ago
MIAMI (AFP) - - Dangerous Hurricane Paloma made landfall Saturday on Cuba's southeast coast as a powerful Category 3 storm, the Miami-based US National Hurricane Center reported.
"At approximately 6:20 pm (2320 GMT) ... major Hurricane Paloma likely made landfall near Santa Cruz del Sur, Cuba, as a strong Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 125 miles (200 kilometers) per hour," the NHC said in a special bulletin.
The storm intensified to an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 hurricane on the 1-5 Saffir-Simpson scale earlier Saturday as it churned across the Caribbean towards Cuba, but weakened slightly as it roared ashore though it was still packing a potentially devastating punch.
Paloma struck Cuba at nearly the same location as a monster hurricane exactly 76 years ago that virtually wiped out Santa Cruz, killing 3,000 people.
Half a million residents have been evacuated from several southeastern provinces in preparation for the storm, which threatens to produce "potentially catastrophic storm surge flooding of 15 to 20 feet (4.5 to 6.0 meters) accompanied by large and dangerous battering waves," the NHC reported, slightly decreasing its surge estimate.
Cuba is reeling from a devastating storm season and Paloma is the third hurricane to crash into the Caribbean nation of more than 11 million people in 60 days.
The storm was moving northeast at 10 miles (17 kilometers) per hour and was expected to decelerate as it crossed the island, according to the hurricane center.
"The center of Paloma is expected to be approaching the Atlantic coast of east-central Cuba Sunday morning and be nearing the central Bahamas late Sunday or Monday," it said.
