According to several media accounts, a T-shirt vendor told police of a suspicious vehicle parked outside of the Marriott Marquis hotel. The car was smoking and contained explosive materials, including commercial-grade fireworks and propane and gasoline tanks. The vendor noticed the smoke coming out of the Nissan Pathfinder at about 6 p.m. A massive investigation into the incident is underway, with Mayor Michael Bloomberg saying Sunday morning that the city avoided a potentially deadly event. The police department’s bomb squad deployed its robot that smashed through the car’s back window and retrieved a box with wires and two clocks. Investigators will scour nearby surveillance footage to see if they can view anyone leaving the Pathfinder in front of the hotel.
