Washington, D.C., DC, United States (AHN) - An Illinois congressman was arrested in Washington, D.C. while participating in one of several rallies held nationwide Sunday protesting Arizona’s recently-passed immigration reform bill.
Police arrested Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-IL, for allegedly blocking the sidewalk outside the White House. He was arrested along with a group of protestors.
Other protests around the country included about 200 people in Phoenix, Ariz., about 55,000 in Los Angeles, Calif. and around 1,000 in New York City.
The new Arizona law makes it a crime to be an illegal immigrant in the state. It also allows police to demand papers from people if officers suspect someone is in the country illegally.
Arizona lawmakers say the bill was necessary because of federal inaction on the issue.
