Moderate earthquake hits Australia; no injuries

 AP - Saturday, March 7
MELBOURNE, Australia - A moderate earthquake rumbled Australia's second-largest city on Friday, but authorities said it caused no damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 4.7 tremor struck Friday night about 55 miles (90 kilometers) southeast of Melbourne, the capital of Victoria state, at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers).
Police said no damage or injuries were immediately reported.
Duty seismologist at the government body Geoscience Australia Phil Cummins said a tremor of that strength was unlikely to have caused much damage, even closest to its heart.
State Emergency Service spokesman Allen Briggs said the service received dozens of calls from residents about the tremor, but no damage had been reported.
"It was certainly enough to rattle windows, and we've had reports it was felt in metropolitan Melbourne," Briggs said.
Victoria state was recently wracked by the worst wildfires in Australian history. They killed more than 210 people.
Damaging earthquakes are rare in Australia, though seismic activity can be felt across the continent. The only deadly tremor in Australia was reported in 1989, when 13 people were killed and more than 160 others were injured when buildings collapsed in the city of Newcastle, 100 miles (170 kilometers) north of Sydney, during a magnitude 5.6 quake.
