Jason Bay delivers walk-off single against Yankees as Mets avoid sweep
Ronny Paulino and Jason Bay each delivered in the clutch for the New York Mets on Sunday afternoon during the Mets' 3-2, 10 inning victory over the Yankees. Paulino tied the game with an RBI single in the 9th and Bay won it with an RBI single in the 10th.

The New York Mets avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the crosstown rival New York Yankees by rallying for a dramatic 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.
With the score knotted at 2-2 and the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Jason Bay delivered a sharp single to centerfield off of Hector Noesi to score Scott Hairston for the victory.
“We lost the game, but we still won the series and we want to continue to do that. We have to move forward and put this one behind us,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “Everyone seems to be throwing the ball very well.”
Bay’s heroics were made possible after Hairston opened up the inning with a pinch hit walk against Luis Ayala. After Angel Pagan advanced Hairston with a sacrifice bunt and Justin Turner was hit by a pitch, Boone Logan relieved Ayala and struck out Carlos Beltran for the second out.
Ramiro Pena committed a costly error, his second of the game, when he bobbled a slowly hit grounder by Daniel Murphy to bring Bay to the plate.
Francisco Rodriguez, who pitched a scoreless ninth and tenth, was credited with the win and Ayala was hit with the loss.
The Yankees, who had won seven in a row going into Sunday’s showdown with the Mets, appeared to be well on their way to a three-game sweep, particularly when Mariano Rivera retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth with the Yankees protecting a 2-1 lead.
However, the Mets refused to go quietly as Jason Bay worked a walk and Lucas Duda singled up the middle to advance Bay to third with the potential game-tying run. That set the stage for Ronny Paulino, who pinch hit for Josh Thole, to deliver a game-tying RBI single on a hard ground ball to right field.
“It was really a great piece of hitting [by Paulino],” Martin said. “It was a great pitch, cutter away and he kind of just stuck his bat out there and found a hole.”
With Duda representing the game-winning run at second base, Ruben Tejada hit a ground ball that got past Ramiro Pena, but Brett Gardner was there to pick up his teammate by unloading a one-hopper to Russell Martin, who applied the tag on Duda to send the game to extras.
“It was just a case of not giving up on it and backing him up in case something happens,” Gardner said. “Sure enough, something did happen. I knew I had time so I just tried to make a good throw and Russell put a good tag on him.”
Gardner was also instrumental in giving the Yankees the lead, as the speedy leadoff hitter yanked a Jason Isringhausen offering down the right field line for a triple to begin the top of the eighth inning. Curtis Granderson then hit a deep fly ball to right field to score Gardner with a sacrifice fly to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
The Yankees scored their first run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Nick Swisher which knocked in Robinson Cano from second base, who led off the inning with a double.
The Mets’ first run came in the bottom of the first when Murphy notched an RBI single to score Beltran from second base after he had doubled.
That first run, however, was all that Freddy Garcia (7-6, 3.13 ERA) would permit through his seven innings of work as the veteran hurler scattered six hits while striking out one and walking none.
“I pitched my game and was throwing a lot of strikes,” Garcia said. “[The blown save] is part of the game. We’ve got the best closer in baseball, but sometimes that’s going to happen.”
R.A. Dickey (4-7, 3.68 ERA) also yielded just one run through five innings of work before being lifted in favor of pinch hitter Jason Pridie in the bottom of the fifth. It was later revealed that Dickey hurt his left leg after he slipped while delivering a pitch in the fourth.
The Yankees will travel to Cleveland for a three-game set against Indians before hosting a four-game series against the Rays leading into the all-star break. On Monday, the pinstripers hand the ball to A.J. Burnett (8-6, 4.05 ERA) and Cleveland will counter with Josh Tomlin (9-4, 3.86 ERA) at 6:35 p.m.
The Mets begin a seven-game road trip leading into the All-Star break with four games against the Dodgers and three against the Giants. On Monday, the Mets send Chris Capuano (7-7, 4.27 ERA) to the hill to oppose Rubby De La Rosa (3-3, 4.41 ERA) with the first pitch scheduled for 9:10 p.m.
