At least 10 toddlers have died of hunger and malnutrition in southern Somalia as severe drought has forced hundreds of rural inhabitants to flood into Mogadishu, witnesses said Monday.
Residents walking along the roads of the capital city could see malnourished children and starving women sitting under the shadow of trees and along the roadsides. Amina Hassan, a mother of three children, said her 3-month-old baby died overnight after she arrived in the city Sunday afternoon.
“I traveled on foot from a village in Bay region and reached at Wanlawayn district [about 90 kilometers south of Mogadishu]. A group [of] destitute starving people with children managed to get a free-of-charge truck heading to Mogadishu,” Hassan told All Headline News.
“During our last hopeful trip to Mogadishu, at least seven toddlers including my 3-month baby died of malnutrition and hunger and three other died while having arrived at Mogadishu,” she lamented, tears gushing from her eyes.
Hassan said she doesn’t have a shelter to hide herself and her children from the sun of the day and cool of the night.
“We received some food and water from Mogadishu people,” she explained, adding that it is not enough. She asked the transitional government, Somali people and aid agencies in the capital to act quickly to help her and the hundreds of others like her.
In response to the unprecedented number of drought-displaced Somalis, Dr. Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, the prime minister of Somalia, has appointed a ministerial committee to help the needy malnourished people who have poured into Mogadishu.
After that announcement, the premier ordered the ministers to act quickly and assess the drought and its affects on the people.
He called upon all humanitarian agencies in Mogadishu and other regions in the country to cooperate with the ministerial committee as soon as possible.
Sunday afternoon, the deputy interior minister, Ibrahim Isaq Yarow, told reporters they had found a large area in Mogadishu’s Dharkeley district where shelter 1,500 to 2,000 families could be sheltered.
“In the days to come, the government will rehabilitate the drought-displaced people and start afterwards delivering humanitarian assistance...purified water, which is very vital to the life the mankind, is among the main plans the government wants establish in the area.” Yarow explained. He urged the international community to deliver urgent humanitarian assistance.
