ADVERTISEMENT "If you don't have insurance, you'll finally be able to afford insurance," the president said in his weekly radio address. "And everyone will have the security and stability that's missing today." The president wants Congress to approve his health care reform proposals by the end of the year in order to fulfill one of his key campaign promises -- providing health care to the 46 million Americans, some 15 percent of the population, who currently do not have any medical coverage. Obama's health care plan includes a government insurance option, which has been fiercely criticized by Republicans. The US president also hopes to cut in half runaway healthcare expenditures which, if unchecked, are forecast to gobble up one-fifth of US gross domestic product by 2013. But he has met increasing resistance from both Republicans and even some among his own Democratic Party worried about the costs of such a reform. Obama flew to Montana on Friday as he took his drive for health care reform on the road in an attempt to wrest back control of the debate on his flagship domestic policy. In his radio address, the president acknowledged that there was "plenty of real concern and skepticism" about his proposals. "I know that in a time of economic upheaval, the idea of change can be unsettling, and I know that there are folks who believe that government should have no role at all in solving our problems," he said. He said these differences were "worthy of the real discussion" that the country deserves. But while admitting the existence of disagreements, the president said there was "widespread agreement on the urgent need to reform a broken system" and finally hold health insurance companies accountable.
