"Social Network" among Hollywood producers nominees
NEW YORK - The Producers Guild of America Tuesday unveiled nominees for their film and television awards with "The Social Network" and "The King's Speech" among nominees for best-produced movie. Those two films were joined by "127 Hours," "Black Swan," "Inception," "The Fighter," "The Kids Are All Right," "The Town," "Toy Story 3," and "True Grit" on the PGA's list of top films as Hollywood counts the days until the February 27 Oscars, the industry's biggest movie awards held in Los Angeles.
Police say Lindsay Lohan violated probation
LOS ANGELES - Police believe actress Lindsay Lohan violated her probation and want her charged with battery over a recent skirmish with a worker at the California rehab center where she spent three months in treatment. Police in Riverside, California, east of Los Angeles, said in a statement that the case against the "Mean Girls" actress should be pursued even though the victim, Betty Ford Center staff member Dawn Holland, wants it dropped. If a judge determines Lohan violated her probation, she could be sent to jail.
Hard-working Nicolas Cage stars in Crusade thriller
LONDON - Nicolas Cage is working hard because he has to, but his latest turn as a mediaeval knight in "Season of the Witch" is about more than just paying the bills -- it is a welcome throwback to his childhood. The supernatural thriller set in plague-stricken 14th century Europe opens in British and U.S. theatres on Friday, and Cage fans will see the "Leaving Las Vegas" star in the unfamiliar surroundings of a period drama.
"Spider-Man" musical gets a new actress
LOS ANGELES - The producers of the ill-starred Broadway play "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" have promoted a supporting player to the role held by an actress who quit the show after suffering a backstage concussion. Teresa Carpio will officially take over as Arachne from Natalie Mendoza on Tuesday, having filled in for several performances, the producers said in a statement.

Oprah's OWN wins over cynics but many fans lost out
LOS ANGELES - Oprah Winfrey's bold gamble on her OWN TV network debuted to mostly positive reviews and encouraging audience numbers at the weekend, winning over some cynics with its feel-good tone. But many stalwart Oprah fans expressed dismay that they could not receive the new OWN network without paying to upgrade their cable television packages -- money that several said they could not afford.
Bigger revenues and attendance for Broadway in 2010
NEW YORK - Blockbuster musicals targeting families and tourists such as "Wicked", "The Lion King" and "The Addams Family" helped Broadway to an increase in gross revenues for 2010. The top 40 theaters took in a total $1.037 billion compared to $1.004 billion in 2009, according to figures released on Tuesday by The Broadway League, which represents producers and theater owners.
Court tosses ABC indecency fine over NYPD Blue
NEW YORK - A federal appeals court threw out a $1.21 million penalty against 44 ABC television stations for violating broadcast indecency standards by showing an "NYPD Blue" episode that depicted a woman's nude buttocks. Tuesday's decision arose from the appeals court's ruling last July that the indecency policy under which the U.S. Federal Communications Commission had assessed the penalty was unconstitutionally vague.
Matt LeBlanc pokes fun at himself in TV comeback
LOS ANGELES - What did it take to get "Friends" star Matt LeBlanc back on television after a four years absence? The price of a lunch with "Friends" co-creator David Crane, and the chance to make fun -- of himself. Riffing on the beloved but dimwitted, skirt-chasing character Joey Tribbiani he played for 12 years on "Friends" and its spin-off "Joey", a gray-haired LeBlanc stars as an outrageous version of himself in the new TV industry satire "Episodes," which debuts this Sunday, January 9.
Pink Floyd re-signs to EMI, sides end legal row
LONDON - Pink Floyd and its long time record label EMI have signed a new five-year deal and ended their legal dispute, the company said on Tuesday. The development will come as a relief to the label, which has lost high-profile acts including Queen, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Radiohead since EMI was taken over by private equity firm Terra Firma in 2007.
