        GAZA |
        Wed Nov 3, 2010 9:56am EDT

GAZA (Reuters) - A car exploded outside a Palestinian police headquarters in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Wednesday, killing a member of a fringe Palestinian Islamist group, sources in Hamas and other militant movements said.
Hamas blamed the blast, in which a second Palestinian was wounded, on an Israeli air strike. Israel Radio said it might have been the premature detonation of a car bomb.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the incident, which shook the city of Gaza during a period of relative calm while Hamas has been trying to impose order since its 2008-2009 war with Israel.
"The explosion of the car resulted from a Zionist air raid," Hamas Interior Ministry spokesman Ehab Al-Ghsain said, identifying the dead man as Mohammed Jamal al-Nimnim.
Sources in militant movements in Gaza said Nimnim belonged to the Army of Islam, a splinter group inspired by al Qaeda and a rival to Hamas.
The Army of Islam joined forces with Hamas in the 2006 cross-border abduction of an Israeli soldier, but the alliance has not endured.
