HP's new CEO to testify at Oracle-SAP trial
OAKLAND, California - Hewlett-Packard Co's <HPQ.N> new CEO, Leo Apotheker, will testify at the trial of his previous company, Germany's SAP AG <SAPG.DE>, as a jury decides what damages SAP will have to pay Oracle <ORCL.O> in a multibillion-dollar intellectual property case. Oracle attorney Geoffrey Howard told the court that Apotheker -- who just started his job at HP on Monday -- will testify. He may have to respond to allegations SAP expected to reap billions of dollars by illegally downloading Oracle software files.
Dell to buy cloud computing company Boomi
LOS ANGELES - Dell Inc <DELL.O> will buy U.S. cloud-computing services company Boomi to shore up its ability to provide software over computer networks. The world's No. 2 PC maker did not disclose terms of the deal for Boomi, which counts Salesforce.com <CRM.N> among its clients and helps integrate so-called cloud-based applications and smooth data transfers between programs.

HELSINKI said on Tuesday. The competition in the market is, however, tightening fast with handset vendors and PC makers moving into the new category of devices, between traditional PCs and smartphones, taking a cue from the success the iPad, a 10-inch touchscreen tablet that began selling in April.
Germany's new e-ID cards raise hackles over privacy
BERLIN - Germany has introduced electronic identity cards that store personal data on microchips, raising fears over data protection in a country especially wary of surveillance due to its Nazi and Stasi past. The so-called eIDs enable owners to identify themselves online and sign documents with an electronic signature, which the government says should "increase the safety and convenience of e-business and e-commerce."
Oracle to buy retail software company ATG
NEW YORK - Oracle Corp <ORCL.O> plans to buy e-commerce software company Art Technology Group Inc <ARTG.O> for $1 billion in cash to compete with other large technology vendors like IBM <IBM.N> which have been expanding their software lineups. Oracle's $6-per-share bid, announced on Tuesday, represents a 46 percent premium over ATG's close of $4.10 on Nasdaq. ATG shares were trading at $5.96 in Nasdaq trading.
Google-backed startup takes location game global
HELSINKI - Google-backed <GOOG.O> mobile social gaming startup SCVNGR unveiled a global push on Tuesday, adding locations around the world to its so far United States focused offering. Since its May launch in the United States, the service, which links elements of gaming and location-based services, has gathered more than half a million users -- growing at faster speed than most rivals in the sector.
T-Mobile USA promises better value-tiered pricing
NEW YORK - T-Mobile USA's new lower priced data service plan will restrict downloads, but the No. 4 U.S. mobile provider is promising better value than comparable offers from bigger rivals AT&T and Verizon Wireless. The U.S. arm of Deutsche Telekom AG <DTEGn.DE> said it is hoping to sign up new data customers with a $10 service plan that will allow 200 megabytes of data downloads when it launches later this year.
Skype IPO to take stage in 2011: sources
NEW YORK - Skype is moving forward on an initial public offering of up to $1 billion, but investors will have to wait until next year before it prices, said several people close to the situation. Despite investor expectations that an IPO would materialize by the end of the year, market conditions and other factors appear to be slowing the offering, said two people close to the situation.
Intel says on track with Oak Trail tablet chips
SAN FRANCISCO - Intel Corp <INTC.O> is on track to launch an improved chip platform aimed at the fast-expanding tablet market, where so far it has trailed nimble competitors that specialize in cheap low-power processors. Code-named Oak Trail and due to begin shipping in early 2011, the chips have much-improved energy efficiency and hold their own compared to processors made by rivals, Marketing Director Anil Nanduri told Reuters.
Google gaining on booming smartphone market
HELSINKI - Google's <GOOG.O> Android software platform rose to No. 2 spot globally on the booming smartphone market in the third quarter, research firm Canalys said on Monday. Nokia's <NOK1V.HE> Symbian continued to lead the market with a 37 percent share, while Android had 17 percent of the market. It has surpassed Research In Motion <RIM.TO><RIMM.O>, Apple <AAPL.O> and Microsoft <MSFT.O> this year.
