NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Walt Disney Co named Ben Sherwood the president of ABC News on Friday, tapping a broadcast news veteran and former "Good Morning America" producer to run the network's global news operation.
Some industry sources had suspected Disney and ABC News might choose an unconventional candidate from outside broadcast news to succeed to David Westin, who resigned as head of ABC News in September after 13 years. [ID:nN06166514]
Sherwood took over as executive producer of the morning show in 2004, guiding it to what ABC called the two most successful seasons in the program's history. He also oversaw coverage of the tsunami in Southeast Asia, Hurricane Katrina, and the presidential election of 2004, ABC said in a press release.
Sherwood, who joined ABC News in 1989, went to work for the rival NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw in 1997, responsible for "In Depth" reports. He later became a senior broadcast producer who helped lead coverage of the September 11 attacks and the contested Florida results from the 2000 presidential election before returning to ABC in 2004.
