AOL to buy The Huffington Post for $315 million
WASHINGTON/NEW YORK - AOL Inc <AOL.N> will buy Arianna Huffington's influential website for $315 million, looking to the high-profile liberal pundit to rescue it from the dustbin of Internet history. The move, announced Monday, comes at a hefty premium. AOL is estimated to be paying 32 times earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization for The Huffington Post, said Benchmark Co analyst Clayton Moran.
Google exec's release in Egypt confirmed by family
CAIRO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> executive Wael Ghonim, who went missing in Cairo, has been released and is on his way home, a family member told Reuters on Monday. "Yes, we spoke to Wael. He has been released and he is on his way home," a member of his family told Reuters by telephone. It was not clear who or what organization had been holding him.
With new executive, Google steps up mobile ad efforts
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> is reaching out to some of its top advertising customers to promote its mobile marketing services, as the Internet giant moves to expand its advertising business from computer screens to smartphones. The effort is being overseen by Karim Temsamani, Google's first-ever head of mobile advertising, who quietly began the job in October.
Nokia up on revamp hopes, E7 starts deliveries
HELSINKI - Shares in Nokia Oyj <NOK1V.HE>, the word's largest cellphone maker, jumped to a four-month high as a delayed top of the range model finally started deliveries and hopes grew for a strategy revamp due later this week. A magazine report said Nokia was likely to sack several executive board members in a management rejig, raising hopes for a shakeup of the underperforming company to be unveiled by Chief Executive Stephen Elop on Friday.
WikiLeaks' founder Assange fights extradition to Sweden
LONDON - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange asked a British judge on Monday to block his extradition to Sweden on sex crime allegations, arguing he would not get a fair trial and could end up facing execution in the United States. The 39-year-old Australian computer expert, who has infuriated the U.S. government by releasing thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic cables on his website, is wanted in Sweden where two WikiLeaks volunteers allege sexual misconduct last August.
Google and EU in antitrust resolution talks: source
BRUSSELS - Google and European Union regulators are in tentative talks to resolve an antitrust probe against the Internet's dominant search engine, a source familiar with the case said on Monday. A deal could avert a lengthy battle and possible fine for the U.S.-based company.
HP's Palm to unveil tablet; challenges loom
SAN FRANCISCO - It's the $1.2 billion question: What is Hewlett-Packard's <HPQ.N> new Palm unit cooking up for tablet computers? Investors and gadget fans are likely to get their answer on Wednesday, when HP plans to show off its entry into the tablet market, along with new smartphones.
TI phone chip to boast interactive projection, 3-D
NEW YORK - Texas Instruments <TXN.N> announced plans for a chip on Monday that it said will give users more versatility in how they use their cellphones, helping it to compete better with rivals including Qualcomm Inc <QCOM.O> and Nvidia. <NVDA.O> TI said that by combining OMAP 5 -- its next mobile application chip -- with its pico projection chip and an embedded camera it will allow phone or tablet users to do everything from writing emails and making calls to surfing the Web or playing a game by simply pointing their fingers at an image projected on a wall or table.
Sony aims to sell more TVs in 2011/12: CFO
TOKYO - Sony Corp <6758.T> aims to boost flat TV sales in the next business year from April and will vary its procurement of LCD panels to help lower costs and turn its struggling TV operations profitable, a top executive said. Raising sales will be a challenge, given that Samsung <005930.KS> and LG <066570.KS> of South Korea, the world's top two makers of flat TVs, have just set ambitious targets for the year and with market growth expected to slow.
Travel apps help you stay on schedule and in touch
LONDON - Where the fast-paced worlds of travel and technology meet, smart phone applications provide travelers with better control over their hectic schedules. Though ash clouds, extreme weather and stringent security measures have cast their fair share of travel gloom, apps on smartphones which help users save time when booking flights; provide constant updates on flight status; allow internet access when on the hoof; and provide detailed maps and weather updates are a ray of sunshine for business travelers.
