Matthias Schepp threw himself under a train in southeastern Italy on Thursday, having failed to return six-year-olds Alessia and Livia to his estranged wife in the western Swiss lakeside village of St-Sulpice on January 30. Since then investigators in Switzerland, France and Italy have established only a piecemeal trail of the 43 year-old's movements without trace of his blonde-haired daughters. On Monday, police maintained their appeal for eye witnesses along the way as they clung to hopes of fresh clues eight days after a Europe-wide search notice was put out. They said there was no sign of the twins, who were both wearing distinctive "medical" spectacles with colourful frames when they went missing, according to the police description. "Contrary to information given on Sunday February 6, police have for the moment had no eye witness accounts of the presence of the twins in Switzerland, France or Italy since Sunday, January 30 at 1300, when they were in St-Sulpice near their father's home," Vaud canton police said. "About 40 men with dogs are on Monday pursing their search in Switzerland, at St-Sulpice, the home of the two young girls, and anywhere they might have been," police spokesman Jean-Christophe Sauterel told AFP. A helicopter flew low over Lake Geneva, while investigators also searched nearby ports and four boats that might have been used by the reportedly distraught father. The homes of both parents in St-Sulpice have also been searched three times while checks were made at his workplace and neighbours and relatives were questioned. Schepp's banking and phone records were also monitored. Schepp, a Canadian-born Swiss citizen, and the mother of the twins, Irina Lucidi, who is of Italian origin, were reportedly going through a fraught separation, with shared custody of the children. He sent her a postcard early last week from the French Mediterranean port of Marseille, saying he was desperate and could not live without her. Swiss police said he also sent a letter a day later from nearby Toulon. The Audi car Schepp had been driving was found on Thursday at Cerignola in Italy's Puglia region after he committed suicide, but it is not clear how he got there from St-Sulpice. Police reported that Schepp was spotted in Marseille, 520 kilometres (325 miles) from the cosy Swiss dormitory village, as he booked three tickets for a ferry crossing to the island of Corsica last Tuesday. Sources close to the investigation in France said French police were focusing on the area of Propriano in southern Corsica where the ship was heading and video recordings of the ferry being unloaded. However it also sailed on to Sardinia afterwards. Mystery also surrounds the difference between the amount of money the father withdrew in Marseille and "a few hundred euros" found on him. "We don't know where the rest is," Sauterel said. Marseille public prosecutor Jacques Dallest said he was working closely with his Swiss counterparts. "We're still not sure that the youngsters were with the father when he was in Marseille," he explained. "We hope we'll have a decisive eye witness account, so the appeal for witnesses is still on," Dallest said. Alessia was dressed in a striped white, pink and red teeshirt, blue jeans, black boots and a white quilted anorak, while Livia was wearing a purple ski anorak, white and pink sneakers.
