But this is a drop in the ocean compared to the billions of dollars wiped off the oil giant's capitalisation and in unknown liabilities, turning it from a sure income generator into a risky bet, in the view of one analyst. The company's stock collapsed by almost nine percent in mid-morning trading to plumb a low of 296 pence on the London Stock Exchange, hitting a level last seen in August 1996, as investors showed alarm over spiralling costs. Shares later pulled back slightly to stand at 305.85 pence, down 5.95 percent from Thursday's closing level. "Many investors are capitulating as BP has gone from a solid dividend-paying cash cow to a high-risk punt," GFT analyst David Morrison told AFP. "It's under 300 pence for the first time in 13 years as it becomes impossible to have even the vaguest notion about what the company's liabilities may finally be." The shares have collapsed by more than 50 percent -- wiping billions of dollars off BP's stock market value -- since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, which it operated, sank on April 22, two days after a blast killed 11 workers. The accident is spreading an enormous spill from a leaking well on the sea bed, with huge amounts of oil washing up on the US Gulf coastline, threatening precious wildlife and local communities. "The cost of the response to date amounts to approximately 2.35 billion dollars, including the cost of the spill response, containment, relief well drilling, grants to the Gulf states, claims paid, and federal costs," BP said in an official statement on Friday. The latest cost estimate, equivalent to 1.57 billion pounds or 1.91 billion euros, compared with a previous figure of two billion dollars that was given on Monday. BP has resumed full siphoning operations from the ruptured oil well, but Florida was forced to close down popular tourist beaches at the height of the summer season as more crude washed ashore. In a further twist, fears are growing that a tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico region may hamper ongoing operations. "Investors are still struggling to put a value on the company as the clean-up in the Gulf goes on," said IG Index analyst Anthony Grech in London. "The threat of a tropical storm hitting the area is yet another reason for the markets to give the shares a wide berth for now." And Morrison added: "The danger is that storms spread the damage further rather than break up the spill effects. As the spill is no where near being contained, the likelihood is the former." The vast slick has already soiled the coastlines of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, but could spell disaster for Florida, one of the world's top tourist destinations with more than 80 million visitors a year. The state's 1,260 miles (2,000 kilometers) of western coastline is home to scores of popular beaches as well as pristine coral reefs and an important fishing industry. Under intense pressure from US President Barack Obama, BP agreed last week to suspend its shareholder dividend and create a 20-billion-dollar fund for costs arising from the spill. The company said on Friday that about 74,000 claims had been lodged, and that it had paid out a total of 126 million dollars, comprising 39,000 payments. BP added that 364,500 barrels of oil have been recovered or flared by its containment systems to date, with 16,830 barrels collected on Wednesday. The group has also flared 36.7 million cubic feet of gas.
