Capitalism the villain as Moore movie hits Venice
ADVERTISEMENT
LONDON - The Venice film festival has capitalism in its sights this year, with premieres of Michael Moore's documentary on the U.S. economic meltdown and a drama starring Matt Damon as a corrupt corporate whistleblower. "Capitalism: A Love Story," in competition at the annual cinema showcase, sees Moore take on the corporate bosses with his trademark combative style, bringing the hot topic of recession to the picturesque Lido waterfront. And "The Informant!," directed by Steven Soderbergh and featuring Damon as a real-life crooked executive who exposed his company's price-fixing tactics, will be screened out of competition. The festival runs from September 2-12.
DJ AM found dead in New York apartment
NEW YORK - DJ AM, the stage name of disc jockey Adam Goldstein whose music could be heard on albums by Madonna and Will Smith, was found dead in his New York apartment on Friday, police said. He was 36. Police said no foul play was suspected in the death of Goldstein, who socialized with Hollywood celebrities and in 2008 survived a plane crash with Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker.
Noel Gallagher quits Oasis
NEW YORK - Lead guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher has quit Oasis, according to a statement he posted Friday night on the band's website. The announcement came shortly after the last-minute cancellation of the group's scheduled performance Friday at the Rock En Seine festival in Paris.
Jackson death ruled homicide, focus on doctor
LOS ANGELES - Pop star Michael Jackson's death was ruled a homicide from drug overdose on Friday, fueling speculation his personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, may soon be charged with manslaughter or another crime. The Los Angeles County Coroner said in its ruling that the powerful anesthetic propofol, which is used in surgery and has been dubbed "milk of amnesia" by some doctors, as well as the sedative lorazepam were the primary drugs responsible for Jackson's sudden death on June 25 at the age of 50.
Label has high hopes for Whitney Houston comeback
LOS ANGELES - "Don't call it a comeback. I've been here for years," Whitney Houston sings on what is, in fact, her latest comeback album. The 46-year-old pop singer, a long-term resident of the record charts during the 1980s and '90s, officially ends a seven-year hiatus on Monday with the U.S. release of her sixth studio album, "I Look To You."
"Idol" champ Kris Allen sets release date for album
NEW YORK - "American Idol" winner Kris Allen will release his debut album on November 17, the singer announced Thursday night on his official Twitter page. A rep for 19 Entertainment has confirmed the news in a statement to Billboard.com.
Spielberg takes on Crichton's "Pirate Latitudes"
LOS ANGELES - It's a 7-year-old boy's dream team -- Steven Spielberg, Michael Crichton and David Koepp moving on from rampaging dinosaurs to marauding pirates. DreamWorks Studios has acquired the film rights to the action-adventure novel "Pirate Latitudes," which Crichton wrote just before his death in November. Spielberg, who directed Koepp's adaptations of Crichton's "Jurassic Park" and "The Lost World," will produce the film and possibly direct.
Court rejects FCC cable ownership limit
WASHINGTON - A U.S. court struck down a rule limiting a cable company to no more than 30 percent of the subscription television market, a victory for companies like Comcast Corp that could spark many industry deals. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled on Friday that the Federal Communications Commission's rule, adopted in late 2007, was "arbitrary and capricious" and vacated it. The regulation was first set in 1993, but has been repeatedly challenged.
Spanish album an unexpected "Plan" for Furtado
MIAMI - Nelly Furtado's first Spanish-language album is a mixture of design and circumstance, as so many grand plans often are. There she was in the studio with her friend, guitarist James Bryan, attempting to help write the lyrics for a song titled "My Plan." But nothing worked. She tried writing the lyrics in Portuguese, but that didn't work either. And then, Alex Cuba -- a Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter whose album Furtado had recently heard and liked -- stopped by the studio to say hello. Why not try the song in Spanish, he suggested. Then he had a go at the lyrics.
Flixster's "Movies" aims to connect film fans
LOS ANGELES - Film website Flixster launched a new version of its iPhone application "Movies" this week, highlighting how technology and the Web are bringing Hollywood directly to fans and bypassing traditional information outlets like newspapers. The transition has wreaked havoc on the newspaper industry which has seen advertising pages plummet as movie studios shift their marketing efforts to the Web, but for social networking websites like Flixster, the change is boosting their users.
