Next threat to Amazon's $9.99 books? Rupert Murdoch
NEW YORK - Enjoy $9.99 electronic books while you can -- for they soon may be a thing of the past. News Corp <NWSA.O> Chief Rupert Murdoch, who oversees a media empire than includes HarperCollins books, home to authors like Michael Crichton and Janet Evanovich, made clear on Tuesday his displeasure with the low price Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> has set for electronic books.
AOL posts profit, but subscribers dwindle
NEW YORK - AOL Inc <AOL.N> beat Wall Street's profit and revenue expectations for the fourth quarter, but its top officers said that revenue from subscriptions and online search-related advertising would fall further in coming months. AOL, which became an independent company once again in December after Time Warner Inc <TWX.N> spun it off, is trying to reshape itself as an online content and advertising company under chief executive Tim Armstrong, a former Google Inc <GOOG.O> executive.
Comcast profit up on Internet, phone subscribers
NEW YORK - Comcast Corp <CMCSA.O> posted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit as it added Internet and phone subscribers, but its margins were hit by marketing costs as the No. 1 U.S. cable operator fends off competition from phone and satellite companies. The cable company, whose senior management spent much of the fourth quarter negotiating a deal to buy a 51-percent stake in NBC Universal from General Electric Co <GE.N>, said on Wednesday it changed its strategic focus midway through 2009 to "proactively pursue market share."
Study links excessive Internet use to depression
LONDON - People who spend a lot of time surfing the internet are more likely to show signs of depression, British scientists said on Wednesday. But it is not clear whether the internet causes depression or whether depressed people are drawn to it.
Cyberthieves are hiring, using online ads
WASHINGTON - The people who brought the world malicious software that steals credit card numbers from your personal computer and empties bank ATMs of their cash are hiring, and they're advertising online. Two companies that are hiring -- at least on a contractor basis -- advertise online, said Kevin Stevens, a threat intelligence analyst for SecureWorks, who presented findings on the organizations at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference outside Washington on Monday.
Google pushes Chrome browser as PC battle looms
LONDON/PARIS - Google <GOOG.O> has taken the unusual step of using real-world advertising to promote its Chrome web browser in Europe ahead of a regulatory change that will make it easier for consumers to switch Web browsers. In a departure from its usual dependence on viral and word-of-mouth marketing, Google is running a billboard and newspaper ad campaign for its Chrome browser in the streets and underground train stations of London, Paris and Amsterdam.
Online gamers set for consolidation wave in 2010
LONDON - Consolidation among online gaming firms is set to spark into life in 2010 with a possible deal between PartyGaming <PRTY.L> and Austria's bwin <BWIN.VI> seen as the potential catalyst for a wave of takeover activity. "I think 2010 is going to be the determining year," said one senior executive of an online gaming group who asked not be named.
Amazon loss on e-book pricing could fuel trend
SAN FRANCISCO - A pricing battle lost by Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> to a top publisher may herald pressure from other publishers, compromising low e-book prices which could potentially hit sales volume growth for its Kindle e-reader. The news highlighted for the first time that the world's largest online retailer, and its market-leading Kindle, could soon be challenged by new rival Apple Inc <AAPL.O> in the mass transition to digital books.

Microsoft's Bing will make money: executive
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp's <MSFT.O> 10-month-old search engine Bing, which has struggled to make headway against Google <GOOG.O>, can be a viable runner-up and make money online eventually, according to one of its top executives. The world's biggest software company has lost more than $5 billion over the past four years trying to build an online business, but hopes to reverse that trend once it completes a search advertising partnership with Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O>.
