Software lobby seeks greater role in U.S. security
WASHINGTON - The U.S. software industry is pushing for a greater role as government officials develop a policy to ward off attacks on the nation's communications infrastructure, a trade group said on Friday. The Business Software Alliance, which represents companies including Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> and Dell Inc. <DELL.O>, told White House officials this week the government should share more threat and attack information with the industry.
UK team builds robot fish to detect pollution
LONDON - Robot fish developed by British scientists are to be released into the sea off north Spain to detect pollution. If next year's trial of the first five robotic fish in the northern Spanish port of Gijon is successful, the team hopes they will be used in rivers, lakes and seas across the world.
Xerox shares plummet after profit warning
NEW YORK - Xerox Corp <XRX.N> chopped its first-quarter earnings forecast by as much as 85 percent, as the slowdown in office equipment spending badly hurt revenue and thwarted its cost-cutting efforts. Shares of Xerox, the world's top supplier of digital printer and document management services, fell 20 percent after its outlook made clear the toll that falling sales of equipment and printer-based supplies is taking on the company.
IBM talks with Sun Micro not just about servers
NEW YORK - An IBM <IBM.N> takeover of Sun Microsystems Inc <JAVA.O> would raise the prospect of creating a clear leader in computer servers, but gaining market share might not be what's behind IBM's expensive overtures in hard economic times. Sun's software portfolio, including Java, MySQL and Solaris, offers IBM a chance to get an edge in nascent open source and "cloud computing" technologies that enable users to easily access applications over the Internet.
Online travel agencies duke it out for bookings
CHICAGO - Online travel agencies, eager to spur spring bookings in the recession, are locked in a price battle that has some of them cutting fees and reimbursing customers if the price of their trip falls after they book. Priceline.com <PCLN.O> on Thursday offered a promotional price guarantee on airline tickets and vacations. The promotion follows a similar deal unveiled this week by Travelocity, and a fee waiver announced last week by Expedia Inc <EXPE.O>.
Palm says Pre on track as revenue plummets
NEW YORK - Palm Inc <PALM.O> on Thursday said its upcoming Pre phone needs "more polishing" but that it was on track to start selling the high profit device in the first half of the year as it looks to grab back smartphone business from rivals. The company gave the update while it reported a wider loss and revenue that fell 70 percent from a year ago, in line with its recent warning for a weak fiscal third quarter.

TomTom sues Microsoft on patent infringement
NEW YORK - Dutch navigation device maker TomTom <TOM2.AS> filed a countersuit against Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O>, accusing the U.S. company of violating three of its patents. The suit, filed on Monday in the U.S. District Court for the eastern district of Virginia, comes a few weeks after Microsoft filed a complaint against TomTom for violating its patents related to car navigational technology and other computing functionality.
China, U.S. trade barbs over WTO piracy case
GENEVA formally ruled some Chinese practices were illegal but exonerated it of other complaints. But the comments also showed that major trading powers were still ready to work within the international rules-based system to resolve rows even if the economic crisis is increasing protectionist pressures.
