May Not Want All The Stimulus Money For His State February 18, 2009 6:04 p.m. EST Julie Farby - AHN Reporter Baton Rouge, LA (AHN) - Rising Republican star and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said he may not be interested in all of the estimated $4 billion allotted to his state in Obama's recently signed economic stimulus package. Speaking to WWLTV, the staunchly conservative Jindal, said, "We'll have to review each program, each new dollar to make sure that we understand what are the conditions, what are the strings and see whether it's beneficial for Louisiana to use those dollars." Although Louisiana faces a possible $2 billion budget shortfall next year and has been allocated $538,575,876 for infrastructure spending in the stimulus package, Jindal and other congressional Republicans have been highly critical of President Obama's stimulus bill. Jindal is slated to give the response to the president's quasi state-of-the-union address next Tuesday, and his reticence to take the money could boost Republican opposition to the massive stimulus bill. Meanwhile, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said he'll take any money that Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal turns down to help pay for reconstruction efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina some four years ago.
