Nightmare home GP for world champ Asada
NAGOYA, Japan (AFP) - – World figure skating champion Mao Asada made a disastrous start to her season, littering her performances with mistakes over two days as she recorded her worst ever score at the Grand Prix NHK Trophy on Saturday.
The 20-year-old Japanese, runner-up to South Korea's Kim Yu-Na at the Vancouver Olympics in February, fell twice in free skating to finish eighth overall, the same as her overnight short-programme position.
Italy's three-time European champion Carolina Kostner won the NHK Trophy, the first of the season's six Grand Prix events, with 164.62 points, keeping her lead from the short programme.
US champion Rachael Flatt finished second on 161.04 points with the best free programme of 107.35, a hundredth of a point better than Kostner.
World junior champion Kanako Murakami made up for Asada's failure for hosts Japan as she took the bronze with 150.16 points, although she fell three times in jumping, in her senior Grand Prix debut at age 15.
"I have tried to rebuild my jumps in the off season but they are not perfect yet," Asada said, on the verge of tears, as she had been the day before.
"They are getting better but have not yet become part of me. I have come halfway and If I can complete the remaining half I can adjust myself into the music."
Asada replaced famed Russian Tatiana Tarasova with Japanese Nobuo Sato as her main coach in September.
"I haven't come to pieces and I think I'm shifting into the right direction in training," the skater said.
Skating to "Liebestraum" by Franz Liszt, Asada popped her opening jump, a technically demanding 3.5-revolution triple axel, and fell on a triple flip which would have been a combination with a double loop.
After singling a triple lutz and a double axel, she fell again after a triple flip but went on to nail a triple salchow and a triple loop.
Asada, who became the first woman in Vancouver to land three triple axels in the same competition, earned 85.45 points, her lowest free programme score since her senior debut in 2005.
On Friday, she scored 47.95 points for her lowest short programme score.
Kostner, the 2008 world silver medallist, called her victory "just surprising" as her programme, widely seen as conservative, did not include many flips and lutz.
"So I just went in trying to score with the rest I had -- the love I had for figure skating," said the 23-year-old Italian, who also won the NHK Trophy in 2007 and the Cup of Russia in 2008. "It really paid back."
Kostner, who missed the 2006 Grand Prix series due to injury, said she hoped Asada would recover from the slump.
"I don't think it's an easy situation for her. She had a lot of pressure from the media," Kostner said. "I wish her all the best to come back strong. She deserves it."
Flatt, 18, who was second at last year's Skate America, said: "We all have rough days and, unfortunately, hers has happened to be here."
"It's part of the sport. Unfortunately it's as much as we want to be perfect everyday," Flatt said. "But she will pull through and be stronger than ever."
Asada, aiming to retain her world crown at the world championships in Tokyo in March, is due to compete in the Trophee Eric Bompard in Paris November 26-28.
Each competitor is allowed to take part in two GP events and the top six in each category qualify for the Grand Prix final in Beijing from December 9-12.
The post-Olympic Grand Prix series lacks some star names, including American Evan Lysacek and Russia's Yevgeny Plushenko, who won the men's gold and silver medals in Vancouver.
The women's Olympic champion, Kim, 20, is also absent as she is focusing on the world championships to regain the title from arch-rival Asada.
