Takahashi took off with the wrong edge in his opening triple-triple combination and touched the ice in a triple axel before skating solidly as the crowd clapped to the music of Perez Prado's Latin numbers. The 24-year-old, who grabbed the bronze at the Vancouver Olympics in February behind American Evan Lysacek and Russia's Yevgeny Plushenko, collected 78.04 points, 3.42 clear of two-time US champion Jeremy Abbott on 74.62. Shawn Sawyer, fourth at the Canadian national championships, followed in third spot on 70.15 points ahead of Sunday's title-deciding free skating. "I enjoyed skating as the audience pumped me up," said Takahashi, dressed in a red and black Latin shirt. "I could perform just about 30 percent of what I meant to do. I will try to make it feel like a tropical night hereafter," he quipped. "I had jump mistakes, unsteady spins and steps that wore me out towards the end. But I got more points than I expected. I guess my programme has been rated well." Abbott, who took to the ice straight after Takahasi as the last competitor, said: "I could hear the crowd for Daisuke and I knew that he just hit it out of the park." "And I wanted to keep my composure and do the best I could. And I did," said the 25-year-old American, ninth in Vancouver and fifth at the world championships in March, after an error-free performance to the tune of a tango. Abbott has recovered from a back problem and has his eyes set on the world championship podium next year. "I accomplished all the goals I set for today and I am happy about it," he said. "I was very happy with my first outing and I felt comfortable." "I love both my programmes here," he said. Takahashi skates to "Invierno Porteno" by Astor Piazzolla in free skating. Abbott's music is "La Vita e Bella" by Nicola Piovani. Each competitor is allowed to compete in two of the season's six Grand Prix events and the top six in each category qualify for the Grand Prix final in Beijing from December 9-12. Lysacek and Plushenko, who skipped the last world championships, are also sitting out the Grand Prix series. Women's Olympic champion Kim Yu-Na is to return to competition at the 2011 worlds in Tokyo in March.
